Above is a crank for my test car and a not started back up ,  Get this ! $100 bucks a week for gas , Maybe the Maya indians are right the world is going to end as we know it by Dec 31 2012 . Untill we get rid of the entire government and start over with the new people,s party ,or at least someone that cares,and has some spine you can do some stop gap things . But first of all I will tell you that their is no magic pill that you can toss in the gas tank that will help ,or anything that you can just dump in the oil that will change a thing. And look out for the scams,like wind spinner items you just stick in the air cleaner and  you more get mpg or add on jets that are nothing more than a bad vacume leaks that cost a lot and get from 10% to 40% better miles per and power to . It just don't work that way. And Magnets on the gas line I could wright a book on that scam .And everytime I see a new super spark plug I just shake my head a $2.00 NGK will beat them all .By the way I just clean my old plugs and re use them .Look at it this way if it is installed in just a few minutes or seconds it most likely is just a SCAM .Things I have done to my test car got me from 21mpg (rated at 24mpg) all the way to 41mpg as of now! But it did take some work .OK!  I hope this will help some .  Heavy trucks and cars have vary low gears to carry the weight. If you drive MT you need higher gearing .Look to see if you can find a add on OVERDRIVE unit that will fit your Auto or Truck (web to gearvendors.com is one )this will change your gearing to the drive wheels(BY the way no one is paying me to tell you this) .   Tire Discounters  have a web sight that will tell you Speedo error if you go to larger tires Kind of like changing gearing (Higher). on Trucks even 2 inch larger will help . Cars 11/2 inch will be good .Be careful don't over do tire size changes .You might have problems with safe handling 2 inch over on cars .This is a lot . .  Next  inflate tires to the recomended MAX .never drive on under inflated tires its like having lower gearing  . Get a good tire guage and check often .Cheap things that will help and are EZ to do . I would advise Use only Synthetic engine oil , and a good filter like K&N ,NAPA gold .STP and Wix , never never use anything made by FRAM ,never, don't even buy their air filters ,bin their done that almost damaged a Toyota (more later)! Next  A lot of Syn oils will hold up for 25000 miles if you change filters often say 6000 to 12000 miles and just add a little more syn oil for losted oil with tossed filter .  With Syn oils you can run hotter and lower the oil weight say 5w20w to replace 10w30w .Long to explane but it will help . With that in mind ,change wheel bearing grease to Syn grease also as well as auto matic tran fluid (but not a must do thing ). What will help  also on Cars & Trucks and Cycles is a K&N air filter ( this will save you in the long hull you will never buy another paper filter <this is later !), oil coated and can be cleaned and re used ,This is a good buy . When you need shocks get Heavy duty or better yet Racing shocks . The stiffer the better .If you don't have anti sway bars ,install them . (this is getting higher priced now) . Sorry   Next !  IF you have Fuel injection you are sort of screwed .But you can find over ride units that will make fuel mixture sensors lie to the main computer that can help a lot ..Find units on Web ( Apex ,GReddy ,Hestec,Jet ,Mega Squirt are a few) Try to run leaner and hot,Syn oil can take it and your engine can over heat lean  . On one of my cars I am vary tempted to remove the FI trash and install old SU carbs that can be fine tuned . If you think that removing the tail gate on your truck will help you are wasting your time .Its been proven that the same truck at 60 with the gate up dose better than with the gate down running side by side . . If you have 4 wheel drive and don't ever use it ,remove the complete drive shaft to the front wheels ,Check with a dealer mechanic on this one ,some cars and trucks Like Subaru ,power goes to the wheel that needs it and can not be changed . If you have lock out hubs on the front you can remove the shaft on most of these .Its dead weight remove it ,it turns remove it . Lite is better . seats you never use .remove them . Maybe find a set of used Alloy rims at the junk yard for larger tires .They can be 1/2 the weight of steel . In town at low speeds (under 50 mph ) windows down AC off . At speeds windows up (AC off if you can stand it ) ACs burns the fuel fast Cut the AC belt and go with out it ,get tough . Most engines run better hot not cold also, But boil over can be a problem , Evans Cooling systems inc. sells Anti freeze that can run vary hot with out boiling at all . If you can run 180 degrees to 220 deg that will help change thermostats (by the way a lot of new Vettes run at 220 to get more power ,Rod shops can help don't try it without Syn oil .non syn oil can't take it .A few other things that will help but require lots of work are  Ignition add on unit that has multi strike at vary high volts ie. MSD say unit 6 with a advance control add on (you can advance timing & retard it from the Dash ) ,you will need vary good wires as well as a matched coil . This will light up the worst gas on earth ,and you can open up the spark plug gap a lot .  Next this is even harder but well worth the work and you better keep the engine for ever (and it should last forever). Balance and blue print the engine ,Light flywheel , Flat tuned cam , 3angle valve job , Stroker crank even better , Closed heads polished and ported (vary important) , needle bearing rockers,with valve stem roller best. Bronze valve guides Great. Solid lifters ,roller solid lifters better,  Race header with anti reverse flow baffles . Webber carbs or holly carbs SU carbs good ,SU with super charger and water alcohol injection great ,forget turbos with gas engine .OK for burning french fry oil . Once you do all of that toss the Auto matic tranie in the trash can(wear it belongs) and install a 5 speed manual or 6, with that add on OVERDRIVE unit now you will have a 10 to 12 speeds, kind of like a old Schwinn Bike with a motor . It is going to cost a lot ,but it works (do the work your self much cheaper) .. I did not say it was going to be totaly EZ or dime store cheap "But Gas ante cheap". If you have a locking toque converter your slipmatic tranie is better than the cheap ones (in most cars)that should be in the trash can, more over you never want the tranie to run hot or the rear end also. Over heat NEVER .One item that dose work that seems like a scam is water injection I built my own unit "real cheap" ,but your motor must run hot with a slight mix of alcohol with the water it will work. Last is a ram air set up ,Great with carbs at 50 mph and up ,Fuel injection will compensate for ram air as well as a stupid vacume leak Scam Jet (magic scam jet device).  Or you could look for a old Fiat Abarth 2 seater hard top from 1959 ,hell they beat a lot of big buck  sport cars on the track and got 56 mpg at almost any speed ,When I see adds for cars to today talking big about what great milage they get maybe a big 35mpg to 40 mpg . A little old Fait Abarth back in 1959 could get "56mpg "and beat Jags on race day. Well they cheated a little ,Jags went for pit stops (GAS) all day long 14 mpg ,and the Abarth only stopped once as(required) thats how they beat power house cars . The Fiat weight 1200 lbs all Alloy body . A Race Jag maybe 2000 lbs or more . Hint !  Triumph spitfire with overdrive 1969, 35 to 37 mpg , Mgb 1968 with over drive 35 to 39 mpg . 1948 to 53 vw bugs 36mpg but only when running right or at all ! Car builders could do much better now but they are in bed with big oil ,or at least it looks that way ,and The rats in big government take the checks from them and look at little you ,and want to make more laws telling you that you can't do this or  that .Or we must fear the next terror attack and maybe you need to be watched you might be a problem  .Or any day now Mexico is coming to take your job . Buy the way little you can't make your own fuel or the ATF will get you . But their is a law forbidding Price Gouging during time of war (Big oil),not a peep on that ,unless it is just one guy selling generators after a storm for more then he payed for them at Pep boys (that guy went to jail) . Their is almost no end to big oil profits now (36 billion last year)and we are still at war . Any questions ! Sorry about the soap box stuff , We need to protest in the streets before its all over but the crying . Maybe gas riots every place you could think of , We spent  our hard earned money on highway taxes and needless wars , not rail systems and national health care ,not mono rails ,not high speed trains .not Electric transit .We got screwed and who do you think did it ? And every time car makers build a few all electric(not electric gas ) cars and let people try them ,they love them ,then they are recalled and destroyed fast . This has got to end .Back to the Milage , things work like this . If I try to brake one small stick of wood its not hard to do ,if I try to brake a hand full of the same sticks it is vary hard to do . What I just told you is ,if you do one small thing to change milage you might see 1/50 of a improvement or maybe almost Zero .But if you do a lot of changes it can really add up . I know I have done it , I have worked on aircraft ,Boats ,sports cars , motorcycles ,all kinds of industrial equipment as well as working in a oil refinery ( note if some oil rep now states they had to close a refinery down for more than a day for maintenance its the biggest lie on earth when I worked at one everything had back ups ,if a pump failed you flipped to #2 and did repairs or replaced #1 running never stopped any other way would be foolish ), I may up date this later hope you picked up something and gook luck ! UP DATE Electric water pump saves 10 hp or more. Every universal joint or cv you have cost 10 hp Electric fan on cooling system saves 5 to 10 hp .Old type air pollution system air pump 10 hp .Thin sidewall tires and their are a lot of them, cost you 5 to 10 hp (Goodrich TAs are not bad) Electric fuel pump will save 1to 4 hp Reduce size of alternator or increase pulley size will save 5hp (problem is if you run a lot of electric stuff you need a big hp robbing alternator) I run a 56 amp alt and I don't miss all that high tec junk the least little bit . Rear drive system" solid rear axel saves 5hp" or more .Posi traction rear (other than Torson ) will cost 1 to 5 hp .HP is money .By the way anti skid computer rear end stearting system will cost you mpg as well as rear end extra stearing system and when they have problems they are a scam to repair . Front end out of aline ,This one might be big hp and dangerous .( You want the tracking to right on the money ) Sloppy spring systems and frames on unibody cars are vary bad on hp and more , Mca Pherson struts are junk and costly to repair ,Sorry I might have offended  Some of you BMW guys . but a old cheap Chevet has Duel A Frames plus no crap fuel injection and got good mileage better than most flimsy jelly bean cars today, And a AC Cobra GT had Duel A Frames front and rear , And that small hand full of cars cleaned all those Mca Pherson guys clock . If you can reinforce the frames some how and keep it light do so . You are now required to think about some of these issues , Maybe find a mechanic that likes to talk about this stuff ,buy some beer and see what you can do . Maybe build a lowend rev high toque better hp engine and don't use all that power just idle down the road at 70 mph with 1400 rpm or less and lean . Thats what I do and it works or at least protest in front of the State house on your day off .I can't do that by my self if no one showes up,it won't work .I may have been a little long but I hope this helps ,Avoid quick fix Scams some seen next to guides like this .
