Some time ago I was changing oil in my work car (Toyota Camry 1999 had since new ) A EZ job I have done many times , Every time I did this oil mess job, when the filter came off the car oil always came out of the filter and ran all over the lower part of the block, the floor and every other place . On the Camry the filter is up side down and at a angle EZ to get to on the front of the engine ,but when loose the oil trapped in the upside down filter will start to run down the front of the block and all over the floor . I know this and I am ready with a few rages and a catch pan in the right location . I was getting Filters on sale at discount auto parts stores and got a few made Cheap FRAM filters .They were the right ones for my car . And when changing oil and removing one of the cheap FRAMs oil did not pour out of the filter all over the block and the floor. I had no mess . After I was finished with the oil change ,I got to thinking "Why did oil not run out of a upside down filter ". So I pulled the old Fram out of the trash and looked it over good .It looked OK ,Then I shook it ,and found the problem . The thing rattled .The paper filter insert cartrage inside the outer steel case was floating inside . The paper filter is supposed to be locked tight on a set of seals by a spring .In the case of the Cheaply made Frams that spring had failed 100% some time between oil changes .Since the filter was floating in the steel case oil under pressure could go from the intake hole to the output and never pass through the paper filter (total by pass ) . I contacted Fram because a broken filter may have shortened the life of the engine . Thay wanted me to send them the filter so they could check it out ." Ya" if I sent them the guilty filter and my engine locks up ,I am 100% sure that they would never have seen that filter and if they did their was nothing wrong with it . A very typical trick for suckers on how to handle a replacement engine . I did not sent them the filter ,I still have it to this day (PHOTO ),and display it at car shows when I go to one .I ran a peice of red silk from one outside hole to the center hole and tied the silk ends together ,and let people play with it a little .Its vary EZ to pull the knot from one hole to the other . And if they can't under stand what is going on I fill them in ,just as what I have told you now .100% failure ! I have even told people who are real Car nuts That Fram filters are Junk ,but when Bubba makes up his dumb mind you can even show him proof and Bubba is still in deniel . I re-surched the problem ,cutting up the rest of the Frams I had not used and cutting up a Filter made by K&N filters and I found a big difference in the way the two are made . Frams use a Real cheap bent peice of steel (kind of like a leaf spring ) to hold the filter in place .And that leaf dose not have much push new and heated and cooled if gives up fast .On the other hand the K&N filter uses a coil spring to do the same job ,(Kinda like the coil springs that push your intake valves ) a coil spring can stand a lot of heat and will resist braking or failure . I know a Primary Engineer ( vary hard to pass the test to be one )that races cars and he knows of the filter problems . He uses only WIX filters on his GT racer (Road Racing) . I have also been warned of problems with Purolator & Lee filters by others that do Racing , A good rule is if you run your Oil for a long time get the best filters you can most ot the time they don't cost that much more . Wix makes filters for other name brands . They are N A P A Gold ,and STP filters and a few others , I know of no problems with Mobile filters ,but I dislike Mobile oil for their Gas Gouging ,and poluting Alaska ,so much I will buy nothing with their name on it .Exxon Mobile,s gouging has gone far enough, and they lead the charge with their pals at Halaburtion ! As well as profiteering in time of War and or National desaster ! Gulity on that one to ! Something that if you did the same, you would be in jail for a long time and all your property taken by the government in a hart beat. Or even charged with Black markiting if you are a enlisted man in the Army an maybe shot (seen it). STP filters can be had at discount auto parts stores cheaper than most and have a good track record . NAPA gold cost a little more ,and they are Vary good . If you want a Top of the line Filter it is K&N filters ,but they cost more than all the others ,But not that much more . Good Filter STP so far ! Better Filter NAPA Gold ( I use them and I do not workor sell for NAPA and they are not giving me a dime ) Wix may be hard to find with their own Name on the box . And TOP of the line made filter K&N are found at most auto parts stores . If you use a failure prone Junk filter you may as well not change it at all or use a discarded out of the dealers trash dumpster that was in another car it will most likely be on by pass to . If you will never use another Fram whatever it is Vote Yes if you are Die hard Farmster because dad used Fram,s when you were a kid and if they worked for Pappy WELL you don't believe this story anyhow . Vote NO .and Run the He*# out of your oil don't change it every week and Don't buy junk filters or anything from FRAM.
