Most people have not heard of the eBay ID Verify Program. It is mainly to develop a true identity, so that both buyers & sellers alike can have more trust in one another. The upside is that it is only $5 to verify your ID, a one-time fee. You'll get this icon  that goes next to your eBay ID to prove that your verified. If your a seller, your buyer will trust you more and buy from you than your competitor. If your a buyer, than the seller is more confident that the transaction will result in a good transaction. Basically, spending that mere $5, especially if your a seller, will benefit you greatly and pay for itself within the first sale or two.

The name of this  is "ID Verify". Signing up for this allows you to prove your identity beyond a shadow of a doubt. You must supply personal information to eBay such as your name, date of birth, drivers license and details of certain credit accounts. ID Verify is not a credit check at all, so if you fail the eBay ID Verify process will not adversely affect your credit rating. It's important for bidders to know that anyone with a bad credit rating will have the same chance of passing eBay's verification process just as anyone else would.

If anybody is concerned with privacy, all information that you submit to eBay is sent through an encrypted 128-bit SSL connection (secure) and no information you give to eBay is stored on their computers after the process of verification has completedl.

As I mentioned earlier, it is only $5 to join. That's your morning latte right there! Ditch the latte for one day & receive more sales and trust on eBay! (too bad that wasn't the ID Verify motto!) This cost is added to your eBay bill. You won't be charged if you do not complete the process or if you do not successfully pass the ID Verify process, however, most people will pass the verification process.

Once you get approved, as I mentioned earlier, you get this special logo that goes next to your user ID (  ) and your feedback total. At a single glance, potential customers will see that eBay has gone the extra mile in proving your identity (as have you) and this will make people more comfortable in handing their money to you, resulting in more sales. Powerseller status, Riches and breakfast invitations from Meg Whitman and Bill Cobb may soon follow!

This entire verification process is done online through Verisign and takes only a matter of minutes. If you are ID-Verified, you also have some other special privledges. You can place bids above $15,000 and can sell in the Mature Audiences category. The main benefit of being ID-Verified is that you give potential buyers the impression of someone who can be trusted and someone who is serious about buying and selling on eBay, making all the better for you. As experienced eBayers will testify, on eBay, image is everything.

People may not be so keen to pay $5, but I would say that it is a small investment that will enhance your reputation and trustworthiness to others and everyone on eBay can afford $5.

When you start taking business away from your competitors, that $5 will quickly pay itself back with numerous dividends.
