Gymboree, Gap, Old Navy, Janie and Jack, Tommy Hilfiger, and MORE....Are you ready to start selling these clothes but not sure how to begin? I have written this guide to give some guidance to the beginning seller. I made numerous errors when I began selling on ebay so hopefully this guide will help you to avoid a few of those yourself. This is a step by step plan to help the new ebay seller get started!!
Getting your first listings ready:
#1 If you do not already have clothing to start selling, you will need to purchase a wholesale lot. I have many different size lots available for sale at BIN (Buy It Now) prices so you can purchase and get your product right away! While you are waiting for your clothing to arrive, upload the Turbo Lister from ebay. It is FREE and an absolutely wonderful tool. Play around with the turbo lister so you get to know it. Also go ahead and open an ebay store. The store will be FREE for the 1st 30 days, after that there will be a monthly fee. Auctions are .20 and higher for listing fee + .35 for gallery picture (I always suggest this) and the store is 3 cents and up to list there.
#2 Now that you have your product you want to take pictures of each item or outfit. If you can take the pictures in the sunlight they turn out the best, if not use as much lighting as you can. I suggest a white posterboard for darker colors and a black or navy blue for the light colors. Make sure to crop your pictures!
#3 Now you can start writing up your listings in your turbo lister. My suggestion would be at least 7-10 items at auction or fixed price for exposure and put the rest in store format. The items/outfits you choose for auction should be in different sizes and different lines (if the clothing you are selling has lines). Store listings do not show up in the general searches so you need the auctions to gain exposure for them. If you always do them in your TL (turbo lister) you will have them for a future date in case you get more of the same item. Another thing about the TL is that you can write the listings 1 or 2 at a time, when you have a few minutes here and there and wait to upload at the right time.
Now for some extras:
**TIMING They say timing is everything, that is sooooo true with ebay auctions! Different items do well at different times. Children's clothing has several different times that are really good and several that are REALLY bad. When you list your auctions (store listings don't matter, they run for 30 days) make sure you are listing in the evening at the correct length (3 day, 5 day, 7 day) to end on any of these nights: *Monday, *Tuesday, *Wednesday, *Thursday. The best times I have are between 7:15 p.m. and 7:55 p.m. (eastern standard time). I have had good luck with around 11:15-11:30 p.m also.
Do NOT have your listings end on Friday, Saturday or even Sunday (unless they are BIN or store listings). Some say Sunday is good but for children's clothing I do not have good luck at all with the weekend listings. You want to make the most you can on your items, so remember your timing!
**DESCRIPTION Here are a few of the particulars you should include in your listing.
Line Name - This is very important!! If the clothing you are selling has a line name put it in the title and in the description. Some people may be looking for a particular line and will search using the line name.
Size - Always remember to put the size in both the title and description.
Condition - NWT (new with tag), NWOT (new without tag), GUC (good or gently used condition), EUC (excellent used condition), LN (like new). If items are not NWT, put in any stains, rips, bleeding, etc... in the clothing. It is always best to be totally up front about this.
Special - Is there anything special about this piece of clothing? Put it in the listing if there is.
**SHIPPING AND INSURANCE Always include this information in your listing!!
Put either a flat rate shipping cost or add the free shipping calculator on all your listings.
Where do you ship to? Include that information in your listing too. If you are shipping internationally make sure to note in your listing that the buyer is responsible for any and all customs fees, import fees, etc...
Do you require insurance or is it optional? If optional you should note in the listing that you are not responsible for lost or damaged packages if they do not purchase the insurance.
Delivery Confirmation is a must!!! I personally do delivery confirmation on all my in-country packages. I use signature confirmation on all packages that are 250.00 or higher and also under other circumstances.
Will you allow returns or do exchanges? You need to have this information listed so there are no problems after the purchase has been made. As long as you clearly state your policy you should not have any difficulties.
What kind of payments will you accept? Paypal is definately the preferred method on ebay. A lot of people will not purchase from you if you do not accept paypal. Will you take money orders or checks also? If so, is there a hold on them for bank clearance? How long is the hold?
Packaging - If you send by priority mail you can get FREE boxes, envelopes for priority mail use only from the postal service. If you will be shipping some items by first class mail, there are several places you can purchase envelopes in bulk to save some money. I suggest for clothing you use poly or tyvek envelopes. I use bubble with mine also for extra protection.
You are ready for your first listings now!!!!
