I've never been very fond of the three-bladed shears used in cutting out pattern pieces. No matter the brand or cost, they all still tend to tear the patterns' edges as you cut the pattern piece out. I found it absolutely maddening to to use them. One day, years ago, I noticed that a brand new Sharpie's line was the same exact width as what the foil shears cut. It was like a lightbulb going off! Now when I cut out pattern pieces, I simply cut away the 'line'. What's left is the perfect pattern piece!
I actually have lots of different pairs of the foil shears in my classroom just so the students can personally use them and see why I don't like them!
