Who is Immortal?

Immortal's conquest began in 1991. Abbath (ex-Old Funeral) and Demonaz (ex-Amputation) came together with the singular desire to create icy, uncompromising Black Metal. Their modus operandi was simple: spikes, corpsepaint and music caustic enough to sear the ears of their enemies.Despite being essentially a two-piece, Immortal created an indelible niche for themselves by writing frosty, fast and catchy songs laden with fantasy-tinged lyrics about a mystical, icy place known only as Blashyrkh. On July 17,2003 Immortal ceased to exist, yet their music has continued to thrive in popularity with the metal music community. Today, Immortal vinyls are some of the most sought after black metal recordings on ebay and a few have even eclipsed $300. My goal for this guide is to create an easy and informative way for Immortal fans to check if the Immortal vinyls they find on ebay are in fact authentic and official. With pictures and a ton of information, I hope to make Immortal record purchasing that much easier for Immortal fans all over the world.

Releases:

Immortal's first vinyl release was a 7' inch called Unholy Forces of Evil  released in 1991. The album featured three tracks, all of which would later be released on the Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism Lp. Needless to say that this recording is tough to get, as Immortal was not the black metal phenomenon at the time as they are today and it was produced in extremely limited quantities. Finding one in Mint or NM condition is nearly impossible. This album normally fetches around $150 on ebay.
Immortal's first full-length LP released on vinyl was Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism in 1992. The album featured 7 tracks and a video was made for the track "Call of the Wintermoon." As this was one of the first Immortal releases, like the Unholy Forces of Evil mini-lp, this vinyl was produced in limited quantities and was in no way seen as a collectible upon it's release. Usually this vinyl fetches around 75 dollars on ebay but has been known to get more for Mint or NM condition.

Immortal's second full-length release on vinyl was Pure Holocaust in 1993. Many Immortal fans, including myself, consider this particular release the best of their early period. This vinyl was pressed in 2000 copies and it is believed that 1000 had green writing on the record and that the other 1000 had grey writing on the record.

This record can typically fetch between $75-$150 dollars on ebay depending on condition. I have not yet seen any price variation between the green and grey records.

Immortal's third full-length release was entitled Battles in the North and was released on vinyl in 1995. This legendary release has been greatly appreciated in the black metal community and Satyr of Satyricon has mentioned in interviews that he considers this particular release the most brutal black metal release of the 1990s. Two versions of this vinyl exist, a black wax which was pressed in 1000 copies and a clear version which was pressed in a mere 300 copies.

The black wax version is known to go for about $105 in mint condition on ebay and about $70-$85 in less than mint condition. The clear version typically goes for anywhere between $300-$350 dollars on ebay.

Immortal's fourth full-length vinyl was released in 1997 and was entitled Blizzard Beasts. This vinyl is somewhat infamous for featuring several misprints including "Blizzard Beats" and "Montains of Might." This particular album is the first to feature Horgh on drums and his drumming certainly adds some new dimensions to the band's musical style. This vinyl was released in 1500 hand-numbered copies and can fetch about $50 if it is in mint condition.

Immortal's fifth full-length vinyl was released in 1999 and was called At the Heart of Winter. As Pure Holocaust is considered the best Immortal release of thier old period, At the Heart of Winter is considered by most Immortal fans as the highlight of Immortal's newer period marked by clear and crisp production. This vinyl was released in 1500 hand-numbered copies and typically can reach $125 on ebay in mint condition.

Immortal's sixth full-length release was entitled Damned in Black and was unleashed upon the world in the year 2000. This album has the distinction of being the last album Immortal released on Osmose Productions and was the first to feature bassist Iscariah. The vinyl version was released in 1500 hand-numbered copies and will typically get $40 or so in mint condition on ebay.

Immortal's seventh full-length release was called Sons of Northern Darkness and was released on vinyl in 2002. Unfortunately for metal music fans this album has the distinction of being Immortal's last official recording before their break-up. This album was released by Nuclear Blast Records and was produced in a limited quantity.
