What Is Chinese Hell Money?
Chinese Hell Money, or Hell Notes are Chinese Funeral Money that are normally burned as an offering to loved ones who have died and reside in the After-World. In Chinese culture there is no Heaven or Hell, only the After Life. Hell Money can also be called Ghost Money, Spirit Money, or Heaven Money.
Are There Different Types?
There are three basic types of Chinese Hell Notes:
- Traditional: Money that looks like common everyday notes.
- Hyper-Inflation: Money with huge denominations, such as $1-Billion.
- Political: Notes with images of political figures in history.
Most Chinese Hell Notes are very colorful and have the image of a man dressed like an Emperor. He is the Lord of the Afterworld. Some notes have fine artwork, and other are common in appearance. Here are a few samples of my hell notes....
Hell Money is normally sold in bundles of 15-60 notes. Bricks are available in large ceremony shops in Chinatowns. If you visit the large Chinatown in San Francisco, you can find shops devoted to Hell Offerings. They have incense, paper goods, and lots of hell money. The merchants tell me they get new shipments from China about every 3-6 months. Hell Money maybe harder to find as Chinese New Year approaches. Most ceremony shops stock their festival goods as New Year gets near.
Hell Money is not sold as single notes in a Chinatown ceremony shop. I sell hell money in my Ebay Store in bundles only. But I do sell single notes in my sampler sets. Also, you might see Hell Notes with serial numbers! Many hell notes have lots of eights ( 8's) on them. The number EIGHT is a lucky number in Chinese Culture.
Finally....don't pay alot for your hell notes unless you REALLY want to add that note to your collection.
