Betta fish are a unique and versatile pet. They are colorful, interesting to watch and generally do not require as much space as other tropical species. However, like all pets, they do need a specific set of conditions and care to remain health and happy. Here are the basics of betta care:
Basic Conditions:
- Ph range – 6.5 to 7.5 (6.8 ideal)
- Temperature range - 75º to 82 º F (80º ideal)
- Don’t forget to add a little sea salt (prevents parasites and fungus)
- Water formula: 2.5 gallons of water + 10 drops of anti-chlorine solution + 1 teaspoon of aquarium salt
(Let water reach room temperature before adding.)
Basic Care:
- Feed once a day, not more than can be eaten in 5 minutes
- Skip feeding once a week
- Do not leave uneaten food in tank or bowl
- Clean the tank or bowl once a week if not filtrated
- Test water Ph once a week (6.5-7.5 optimum)
- Keep tank or bowl covered or leave significant room at top
- Keep any live plants well maintained
- Use a soft, fine mesh net for removing fish
- Watch for disease symptoms (see table)
- Wash hands before and after betta care
