Maybe it's because I am a redhead with blue eyes and freckles, but I've always been partial to Midge. She's the un-glamorous one. The "girl next door" with the same identical body as Barbie. She could share Barbie's wardrobe, but had her own boyfriend, Allan.
Midge (#860) was only in production from 1963-1967.
She was introduced as Barbie's Best Friend and helped promote fashion sales with the Barbie and Midge Mix 'N Match Fashion Paks. Midge and Barbie could dress alike without being identical. After all isn't that what best friends do? Midge, like Barbie came with one hair style (the flip) but she came in various hair colors, Blonde, Brunette and the infamous Redhead. All had freckles and the renown blue google eyes. If you can find a non freckled Midge, an eye color besides blue or a Midge with teeth showing it is a rare thing. And usually more valuable than the normal Midge.
Allan (#1000) was produced from 1964-1966.
This tall brown eyed hunk depended on Ken for clothing. Aside from his original bathing suit set he only had one other set of clothing with his name on it. It was #1425 "Best Man" and it featured a white dinner jacket, black zipper trousers with soutache braid, white lace and peral trimmed shirt, red cummerbund and bow tie, black shoes and knit socks. It is very hard to find. The doll was named after the original Barbie's real husband (Barbara Handler) and when they divorced in the mid 60's, the Allan doll dissappeared and NEVER returned.
When the first bendable leg dolls came out in 1964-1967 Mattel made a Midge Bend Leg (#1080) and an Allan Bend Leg (#1010).
Midge went away for several years but resurfaced in the late 80's as California Midge and Cool Times Midge in the Play line. My favorite is the Cool Times Midge from 1988. She's just so cool.
That's my tribute to Midge.....The Forgotten One and Allen her long lost boyfriend. I hope you have found something useful in this page or at least that you enjoyed reading it. And remember that beauty is only skin deep and freckles are beauty's way of trying to get from the inside to the outside ............... at least that's what my redheaded Daddy and my redheaded Grandma used to tell me.
