The baby boomers are now entering the ripe ol' age of 60 and it is a great find to go to a sale or a doll show and see wonderful dolls that were loved in the baby boomers child hood. My memories are of my very first love, Miss Tiny tears I received her at the age of 5 and thought her little suitcase was a wonderful thing to behold. In the 1950's Tiny first was born with a hard plastic molded head with reddish brown lambs wool wig then later was the painted molded hair . She had a rubber body and when you placed her bubble pipe in her mouth pushed her tummy she really blew bubbles of course you had to put soap water in the pipe but it was a thrill to smell this new rubber and give her a bath. She even came with ivory soap that floated. The next tiny had hair and was a stiffer body. A new vinyl had been developed and the doll companies were going wild with it . She was still tiny but not as soft . I didnt get one of these but my younger sister did but I liked mine better. My birthday was the first week of Jan so I received another little plastic doll this year she had a button in front and one in the back which nodded her head or shook it to say no she was only 12 inches but I had watched Miss Frances on Ding Dong school and she advertised this doll .I needed it bad. We always got dolls at Christmas . My sisters and I took care of our dolls because they had to last us until next christmas or birthday. My sis had a big baby that was made out of laytex rubber an early forerunner of vinyl and it tore very easy. I was the Dr one day and had a stick to take its temp . just as i put this stick to its bottom it tore We were happy to play with this doll with a huge piece of black tape over its bottom but by gummy it lasted!! Next Christmas I was thrilled to see that Santa had brought me a huge doll with a plastic head and a cloth body these dolls were called the new unbreakable plastic and these dolls were tough The arms and legs were rubber and she was stuffed with cotton . She wore a beautiful organdy dress with a matching big bonnet. This was the year my older sister received a life like crying doll made by Ideal It was called Blessed Event and was an ugly doll but I had never seen an ugly doll to me they were all beautiful As I grew so did my dolls I was getting little girl dolls now not babies as I was used to receiving. I remember my Posy doll she was made like the hard plastic Saucy walker but her head was vinyl . She was a beautiful big doll and would walk when you held her hand she was a blonde and the hair was rooted in the scalp. This was a big step in doll making in 1956-57. Next came of course Miss revlon she was another step in the doll companies progress she was a lady doll and lo and behold had breasts . My dad had a few things to say about the doll companies going somewhere in a hand basket but I didnt care I loved my fashion doll my sister always received dark hair and mine was always blonde . Grandmother always sent dolls so we received Fluffy a cute little 10 inch doll made by effanbee so cute! Well now its 1959 and 1960 and Barbie hits the market I didnt like Barbie I loved my babies and of course I thought I was to old now for my loved playthings so they went on a shelf to collect dust. I admired them and to this day I still have them as my sisters have theirs. When you remember your dolls and start collecting them The thrill is in the hunt and the memories that swell when you hold your favorite doll. is great . It saddens me to think that games and TV has taken the little girls away from dolls and the ones I loved are now considered old and often called antiques . I am now 60 and I look at my dolls and say how did they get so old so fast.
