Post Clamps
You can mount a baby gate or pet gate to a post if you have the right hardware - Post Clamps. The best part is this: you won't need to put holes in your woodwork.
Here's how it works. The wood-clamp parts bolt tightly to each other around the post. You can then screw the gate into the wood clamp without attaching the screw directly into the post.
For the clamps featured here, the post must be 3 and 3/4 inches or smaller in width.
Square Post
If your newel post is square at the top and square at the bottom, you use two square clamps, one at the top and one at the bottom, like the clamp shown here:
CARDINAL GATES - SQUARE POST CLAMP
Round Post
For a post that is round both at the top and at the bottom, choose two round clamps shown here:
CARDINAL GATES - ROUND POST CLAMP
Square & Round Combination
For a wood post that is round at the top and and square at the bottom or vice-versa, simply use one round clamp and one square clamp.
Mounting to post on one side of gate.
The above combinations will work for a gate that mounts on one side to a newell post and on the other side to a solid surface such as a wall with a stud as shown in the photo below. You will need two clamps for one side of the gate.
Mounting to posts on both sides of gate.
The combinations will also work if you are mounting your gate on both sides to newell posts. You will need two clamps for each side of the gate. (Four clamps total.)
