Sign Language for Babies-Reasons and Benefits

Ever wonder what your baby is thinking?  Wish you could understand why he/she is crying or having a tantrum? Maybe he/she is hungry? Sick? Thirsty? Tired?  Wouldn't it be great to understand your little one?!!!!

There is nothing more frustrating than guessing what is wrong with your baby. But, it doesn't have to be that way anymore!  Signing for babies and toddlers can make ALL the difference in the world.  Preverbal babies(Babies who can't talk yet) do have the manual dexterity, mental and visual ability to sign their needs.  That's why sign language is such an effective means of communication in infants, starting at about six or seven months of age(or even younger).

Amazingly, observant children often pick up signs within a few weeks of introduction and most learn to link words together very quickly.

Parents who have purchased our SigningTime Dvds have written to me exclaiming about them.  The terrible twos aren't so terrible when a baby can sign his/her needs.  Young infants don't cry as much when they are able to tell Mom or Dad that they are thirsty, tired, etc! It really is amazing!

Here are just a few of the benefits of signing with your baby:

Benefits of Signing With Your Baby

  1. Signing families generally experience less frustration between babies, parents, siblings and caregivers because communication is expressed in a manner that is natural and easy for babies to comprehend and use.
  2. Signing families usually develop a stronger parent-child bond.
  3. Signing with your baby compliments and enhances communication between all family members using it with the baby.
  4. Signing babies often develop a better understanding of language and increased language competency.
  5. Signing with your baby stimulates intellectual growth and lays the foundation for a primary and secondary language.
  6. Signing babies often experience higher levels of self esteem because the use of signs empowers a baby with an effective means of self expression.
  7. Signing families can direct their communication to the specific needs and wants of their child and tailor the practice to meet their own family's needs.
  8. Signing families often experience fewer tantrums and less built-up frustration during the "terrible twos" because communication was better and needs and wants were expressed more effectively all along through the use of sign language.
  9. Children who signed as babies often score higher on IQ tests, have larger vocabularies than their peers, and an increased interest in books.

So, get signing and stop the whining!!  You and your baby will be happy you did.
