Life is a journey of experiences, some good, some bad. But with the good ones, we hold onto and make them even better. With the bad ones, we hope we learn a lesson and don't repeat the mistakes. I think I have graduated from SOHK University several times now...(School of Hard Knocks), I believe I am what is called Alumni. With that said, I would like to bring some of those experiences to light for others, so that they do not spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on what should be pro-audio components, but end up with something this side of, well, junk to be frank.....Not sure I would have listened, but hope others take heed. As I have stated in some of my other reviews, we started this adventure about 2 years ago when we wanted to do some outdoor concerts in a local park for our local churches. What started well and seemed to work was some of the items purchased right here on ebay. We bought M_d_s_n speakers (you fill in the blanks) from an ebay seller, the specs seem quite good and without experience the deal was just too good to turn down, heck, two two-way 15" cabs and stands for $450, we couldn't go wrong...or could we? We bought, and bought until we had a total of 12 mains for our venues, 6 per side. They seemed OK, at first but after some use we started noticing they sounded honky and distorted, we were at the time driving them with B'ringer amps, and that is a whole other issue. We upgraded amps since we found the B'ringer stuff is cheap, I did not say it did not work, just cheap and failed us often. We added QSC PLX series amps and things all sounded better, a bit more punch, and clarity, however the speakers just were not performing as we had hoped....We have opened the speakers up and found rust on most of the screws in the cabinets, and parts, along with drivers, etc. OK, but not quite the pro level as touted...we really got a surprise when we came across 8 new cabinets locally with dual 15's and a quality 3" driver on a 2" throat horn...when we heard the difference, the old had to go and the new had to be acquired. I know that even the new speaker we have are not quite the pro level, but for custom cabs with Eminence and Selenium drivers we have been pleased with our purchase and allotted budget. If you are really seeking good pro-audio, save your money for good speakers, like main cabinets that are $1500 each or so and subs that are in the same area...we have found you really get what you pay for, and most of the time more of the junk is not better. We have found the same for mixers, compressors, amps, effect units, cables, connectors, etc. There is a reason the stuff costs like it does...it is the real deal. I think we have made about $5000 in mistakes, where we have found and heard components that made what we had sound like, well, junk. We have cashed out on all that and now are taking some of our older rack gear, etc. and slowly upgrading to quality components. Not saying that all we had was junk to begin with, it fit a purpose and a budget at the time....it just amazes me that when we hear good quality systems and components....there is a reason they sound good....save up for the good stuff....i know it is tough, tell me....if you want to hear more war stories, email with questions on components, systems, etc. I am sure i have had one at one time or another...i have included a few pictures of a QSC amp and B'ringer to show you what I am talking about....pictures are of a QSC and B'ringer amps RMX 2450 and EP2500, in the first pic, the QSC is on the left, B'ringer on the right..notice the size of the torroid xfmr. and the lack of circuit board real estate. The next pic is the in close of the QSC and then the in close of the B'ringer, you be the judge....
