I will begin by saying "DO NOT UNDER BUY SIZE ON A PLASMA CUTTER". You cannot use a 2nd pass as you can with a welder, so buy a plasma cutter made to cut what you intend to cut the most. Plasma cutters are rated by thickness they will cut. The actual cut is usually stated in 3 to 4 grades. Actual rated cut, will be smooth as if cut with bandsaw. Quality cut, will have some lines in cut surface, sever will be cut, but not neatly. Also larger units will have a pierce rating, meaning how thick a piece it will pierce with no pilot hole to start with and not at the edge of the piece. These ratings are based on cutting mild or stainless steel. Also make sure you have enough available electrical service to operate the plasma cutter. We sell 5 brands, ESAB, Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster series, Miller Spectrum Series, Hobart Airforce series and Lincoln Pro-Cut series. Hobart is owned by ITW same as Miller, and they are essentially the same units built in same plant. I suggest you look at each unit in our listings, look at the 3 ratings, air requirements and power requirements. All listings have link to Manufacturers Spec page. Also general rule is that plasma cutters will cut 1/2 the rating when cutting aluminum. ESAB is one of true innovators but all are quality equipment and perform to their rating. Cutting with a plasma cutting system is much safer than with Oxygen, Acetylene or other fuel gas. And while consumable parts may seem expensive, so if oxygen and other fuel gases, and you don't have all the flame and heat distortion. While how thin the material is not a real issue, Most plasma cutters 1/2" and down will operate just fine on a welder/generator, but again check factory spec sheets, linked on every listing for power requirements.
Plasma cutters with built in compressor I feel are great for artists. They will cut 1/8" effectively. We offer the Miller Spectrum 125C and the Hobart Airforce 250A. Also very good for HVAC or restaurant fixtures where 110V power may be all that is available and no compressor required.
All listed below require air compressor or compressed air cylinder to operate.
3/8" cutters. All require a compressor. See specs on each unit for required air CFM and pressure as well as power requirements. Many of this size work on 110V and 230V with proper adaptor, which has to be made. We offer the Esab Handi Plasma 380, Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38, the Miller Spectrum 375 , Miller Specrum 375 X-treme, Hobart Airforce 400 and the Lincoln Pro-Cut 25. While there are a few 3/8" rated cutters on the market with built in compressor, we do not feel they are currently priced competitively.
1/2" cutters. We offer Esab Handi Plasma 550 and Power Cut 650 5/8"), Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 51, Miller spectrum 625 and Hobart Airforce 600. We offer but do not list the Lincoln Pro-Cut 55.
7/8" cutters. We offer Esab Power Cut 875, Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 81 and Miller Spectrum 2050.
1" cutters. We offer the Esab Power cut 1250, Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101 and Miller Spectrum 1000.
1-1/4" cutters. We offer the Esab Power cut 1250 and 1500, Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 151. All other 1-1/4" cutters currently on the market require 3 phase power, these use single phase.
