Anything could happen on ebay. In the early 2002, I have seen many of this kind of scam. within the last two months I saw about 3 times on ebay. Geeez. is this still happen? the oldest scam?.
It seems that some highend electronic gadget are getting many bids, too many bids and the bids are going up to ridiculously high price. But this is not a case of a seller who is using shills to increase the bids for the items he is offering. This is a case of scammer creating their own shills to scare another bidders.
The scam works this way: The scammer (a legitimate bidder at the time) finds an item he/she wants to bid and buy, and he/she places a single bid on that item. Then, using other bidding identities (their son's, niece's or grandma's account), he/she enters many more bids that not only outbid his one legitimate bid but also outbids all other bidders including the bids of the phony bidders he/she has created.
The legitimate bid for that item might stop at $125.00, but the highest phony bids could reach $250.00 or $400.00. this phony bid price will scary other legitimate bidders - but in the last seconds of the auction, the phony bids are all retracted, leaving the low legitimate bid to win the item who was the scammer!.
Watch out for this scam.
