Dressing in prints can be a fun way to spice up your wardrobe. By pairing them with solids, you add interest to what could be an otherwise boring outfit. Not sure how to incorporate prints? We’ve got you covered with our 4 simple rules.
Remember these and wear those prints proudly!
Rule #1: Wear prints proportionate to your figure.
When shopping for prints, take into consideration your figure. Large-figured women should look for patterns that have larger elements against simple backgrounds. On the other hand, petite women will find that smaller prints work best for them. Patterns can create an optical illusion on any body type. On a larger woman, a small print will make it seem like there is much more fabric, and thus much more person underneath! Likewise on a petite frame, a large print will move the eye to larger areas at once, rather than capturing the more subtle curves.
Smaller patterns allow you to show off your figure, which a larger yet bolder element works best for larger-figured women.
Rule #2: Wear animal prints conservatively.
An animal print of some kind seems to always be on trend. A nice leopard or zebra print can be a funky and sexy addition to your outfit, but it shouldn’t be the main attraction! For these types of prints, shop for accessories like shoes and handbags. By keeping it limited to smaller pieces, you can get the look you want without overdoing it.
Sometimes a little can go a long way, especially when it comes to animal prints….
Rule #3: Keep it simple.
While your new print dress or blouse has a beautiful floral pattern, don’t be tempted to overdo the look by over-accessorizing. Complete your look by choosing simple, neutral pieces that will compliment the pattern. Try pairing a print dress with metallic shoes and understated jewelry. If you’re headed to the office, jazz up your classic black suit with that patterned blouse and a colorful bag. Just remember, wear only one print at a time.
Partner up your classic suits with a patterned top to add a bit of style and flair!
Rule #4: Let the print do the work.
Prints can be more than a cure for a boring outfit; they can serve as camouflage for those “problem areas”. For example, if you have a spoon-shaped figure (broad shoulders, narrow hips), balance out your body by wearing a printed skirt with a solid top. On the other hand, if you have a pear-shaped figure (wide hips, narrow shoulders), then you can wear a printed top with a solid bottom. In either instance you can balance out the appearance of your figure by using the pattern to your advantage.
Now that you know the rules, go have fun with your prints. Head on over to BHFO to get shopping now!
