I know that this scam is used with cars, boats, and other stuff .... but we are involved with motorcycles and parts all day, so this review is aimed at motorcycles (but can be used universally)
IF A MOTORCYCLE IS ADVERTISED ON EBAY FOR AN 'EXTREMELY' LOW PRICE, IT IS MORE THEN 90% CHANCE THAT ITS A SCAM. We see TONS of bikes advertised for 'BUY IT NOW' prices of $2000-$3500 .. and the bikes are EASILY worth $6000 and more. DO NOT think you are getting a good deal, or that THIS is your special day. IT'S NOT. THAT LISTING IS A SCAM. DONT EVEN BOTHER.
Things to look for in these types of listings::
1. buy it now price offered only .. no bidding
2. BIN price is EXTREMELY low. MORE than 50% below blue book value
3. The ebay user is BRAND new and has no feedback, and/or has joined ebay very very recently.
4. The ebay user APPEARS to have good feedback, but in the listing they DEMAND that you email a certain email address for more info, and NOT click on 'contact ebay user' ...
5. When they WONT let you come and look at the bike even though you are LOCAL.
6. When they will not supply you with a phone number you can call.
7. When they REQUIRE you to send money immediately or before hand without being able to see or pickup the bike
There are probably more things, and we will add them as we remember more. But just be careful. Dont be stupid. ONLY contact the buyer through the 'contact buyer' or 'ask seller a question' link. Always ask for a phone number too. Spending thousands of dollars on a motorcycle definitely warrants asking for a phone number and talking with the buyer face to face.
Good luck to everyone. Bottom line, if its WAY TOO good to be true, it usually is. There are HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of people on ebay. MILLIONS are looking at the same bike you are. YOU arent lucky if you stumble onto a RIDICULOUSLY CHEAP bike. Dont be fooled!
