The day time is fine time, but the nighttime is the right time.
If you're a bidder looking for the last-minute snipes, I suggest you become a night owl.
An eBay night owl can swoop down on items with low starting bids while everybody else is hibernating in bed.
Your best hunting hours are between 11p.m. and 4a.m.
In the day time, when decent folk shop between 6p.m. & 10p.m., last minute bidding wars usually occur.
However eBay's bidders of the night know the sweetest deals come when the sun goes down.
You might want to set your alarm clock to an unrespectable hour like say 2a.m. Become a night owl and swoop down on that mousey starting bid of .99 cents. in the wee hours of darkness.
If you burn the midnight oil, you can search ebay auctions for "time ending soonest" and catch some great bargains as the late night auctions come to a close.
Let the daytime people get into last minute bidding wars, but a penny-pinching night owl only hunts in the dark!
