Hello. There are many manufacturers and dealers out there that have a vast array of beautiful BBQ and Bar Islands. At first glance, the thought of purchasing the model as seen on the show room floor may enter into one's mind, especially if being persuaded by an over eager salesperson, whether subtle or not. One of the major things that one should seriously consider, is whether or not the model being considered will comfortably fit into the backyard. The actual amount of floor space (concrete/patio area) available may seem to be enough to fit the island you are considering. Before purchasing, it is important to write down the measurements of the unit you are considering and then, BEFORE handing over the down payment, measuring out the same dimensions in the location you are planning to place the unit. Now, have you considered the room required for the placement of chairs /barstools? Good. Have you also considered the room required to pull the barstool away from the island and still have ample space to climb into the stool without it's legs falling off the edge of the patio/concrete, getting stuck in the grass or planter area and perhaps allowing you to fall off also? A very important detail. You may also consider writting down the dimensions of the area you have planned and then taking those with you when shopping for an island.
Along with designing and building islands for other companies, I have also designed backyard landscapes for contractors here in the Southern California area for the past 11 years. My experience includes creating detailed drawings, that are drawn to scale. With this experience, I know the importance of physically being at the site to see for myself what design would work in the best interest of those looking to purchase an island or bar. If you live within a reasonable driving distance from Corona, California, I will come to you for an in home estimate and design. It is my opinion that it is in the best interest of both the consumer and the seller, to discuss the options while physically looking at the area to be used.
Speaking of options, do you really want a sink installed? Though the thought of having a sink installed in your outdoor island or bar may seem like the logical thing to do, please consder one VERY important matter. Where do you plan on having the sink drain? If you are considering having the drain linked up with the irrigation drain, where does it actually drain to? You know, where are the food particles going to end up? Just a thought. Of course you plan on using the sink for liquids only, right? Do your guests know that? And how much time will it take before the tiny food particles start gathering?
I may write more on this article but, in the mean time, while considering the purchase of an outdoor bar or island, shop. And then shop some more and ask lots of questions. Don't settle for something that your not sure of.
