Yes, you can test any item for BAKELITE! It is quite hard sometime to determine if an item is really bakelite or not. Who wants to pay a high price for an item if it's not tested properly and listed accordingly on eBay!
If you have Formula 409, which can be bought in any grocery store, the test is quite simple! First, you get a couple of cotton swabs and dip them in the 409, then rub, (not so hard) on the inside of the bracelet. It will take approx 10 seconds of rubbing. Then, look at the cotton swab. If it has a yellowish-brown tint, then it is positive for Bakelite. If it doesn't, then it is mostlikely lucite.
Using the 409 does NOT in any way hurt the item! Only black items may not test conclusively, but all other colors are fine.
Also, simichrome can be used. It leaves a yellow residue on the cotton swab. Then, there's one more test - bakelite has a distintive odor when placed under hot water for one minute. Celluloid has a camphor smell with hot water!
Remember, bakelite bracelets and bangles have a distinctive clinking sound as they bump togerther on your wrist. It's a music all their own!
Hope this helps!
