I've owned couple different Nokia cell phones. Usually the cell phone
itself could last forever, only thing that goes wrong is the batteries
have reached their end of life cycle. Then it is time to buy a new
battery. Genuine Nokia batteries usually costs $40-60 at most retail
locations. So I went on to eBay in hope of finding "Genuine Nokia at
eBay Price".
It seems like that most sellers on eBay are selling off brand generic replacement
batteries. Since I do not trust off brand products, I entered keyword
"Genuine Nokia BL-5C Battery" (this is the battery for my current
Nokia 6682 cell phone, and a lot of other newer Nokia phones).
Lucky me, I found a bunch listings which claim the battery is
genuine. I've chosen a seller who sells the "genuine bl-5c" for $6 a piece
and bought 2 of them from him right away.
I received the battery in a timly manner, but only to find out they are fake bl-5c.
To distinguish, it is fairly easy. I went to nokiausa's webpage and found
the battery check link. I went in and followed the directions in the battery check
instruction.
Compared to my original bl-5c, the fake bl-5c battery i received even include
a hologram "Nokia Original Enhancements" logo, but with
futher investigation, I soon find that the fake bl-5c have many weak
points that indicating it is a fake.
Follow the nokia battery check instructions:
Step 1.
When looking at the hologram label, you should see the Nokia
Connecting Hands from one angle and the Nokia Original Enhancements logo
looking from another angle.
The original and the fake looks almost identical when viewed in a fixed angle.
The original battery's Connecting Hands moves in different directions when viewed from different angles
Fake's hands does not move and is fixed at one location when viewed from different angles.
Step 2.
When you angle the hologram to the left, right, down and up sides of the logo,
you should see 1, 2, 3 and 4 dots on each side respectively.
The original battery will only show one dots at one perspective, when shifting to another perspective
(say from top view to bottom view) you'll see another point. No more than two dots could be seen at one angle.
Fake ones have dots simply printed on the hologram so you can see 4 dots all at same time no matter what angle you
turn your battery.
Step 3.
Scratch the side of the label to reveal a 20-digit code, e.g. 12345678919876543210.
Turn the battery so that the numbers are facing upwards. The 20-digit code reads starting
from the number at the top row followed by the bottom row.
In this step, the fake battery have the 20-digit numbers printed so badly that part of the top
numbers are off the hologram, thus, you can not even use nokia website's genuine battery
verification link, this means that the battery is definitely a fake. If you purchased a battery and
the 20 digit number failed the verification on nokia website, it is probably a fake.
Step 4.
Verify 20-digit code on Nokia web.
My genuine nokia battery passed verification process, while my two fake
ones had same 20-digit number and all of them have top half printed
outside of hologram thus unable to indentify.
Also check on the back of the battery.
Genuine battery uses two languages to print caution statement and where
the product is made, while fake ones use only english to print caution statement.
The printing quality of the text/images of the fake one seems a bitmap copy scan of the original
Nokia battery design, so the edge of text or graphics have strong artifacts
(bad jagged edge on all text especially around the "-" and "+" signs)
Genuine battery's matrix barcode on back of battery is significantly more complex
than the fake (see pictures provided below)
Word of advice: Buy from authorized dealer to ensure you are getting a real genuine Nokia battery.
If you are purchasing on eBay, make sure seller offers refund for the product and if the battery
you've purchased is a fake, ask for full refund and report to eBay.
Fake batteries might damage your Nokia phone and your phone's warranty go void if you are using
a fake battery.

If you have one original nokia battery that went bad and need replacement,
save the original incase the next battery you are going to purchase might
be a fake and needs the original battery for comparation purpose.
