Avalokiteshvara literally means the Lord Who Looks Down. Avalokiteshvara is a Bodhisattva who embodies compassion of all the Buddhas. He is also referred as Padmapani(Holder of the Lotus) or Lokeshvara(Lord of the World). According to Mahayan doctrine, Avalokiteshvara is the Bodhisattva who made the great vow to listen to the prayers of all the sentient beings and also not to attain Buddhahood until he hasn't assisted all the sentient beings to Buddhahood. There are seven forms of Avalokiteshvara: 1. Amoghapasa, not empty lasso or net, 2. Vara-sahasrabhuja-Locana or Shasrabhujasahsranetra, 1000-hand and eyes, 3. Hyagriva, Horsehead, 4. Ekadasamukha, 11 Faced, 5. Cundi, 6. Cintamani-Cakra, Wheel of Sovereign, 7. Arya Lokiteshvara, Holy One. According to Newari Buddhism there are eight forms of Avalokiteshvara: 1.Padmapani Lokeshvara, 2.Amoghapasa Lokeshvara, 3.Sadakshary Lokeshvara, 4. Harihariharihari Vahan Lokeshvara, 5. Sristikanta Lokeshvara, 6.Rakta Arya Avalokiteshvara(very famous among Newars), 7. Lokanath Lokeshvara, 8. Sahasrabhuja Lokeshavara.
