There are several guides on eBay that discuss the history and popularity of the Demdaco Willow Tree Figurines by artist Susan Lordi. This guide is intended to give the collector some ideas in using their figurines in Autumn Decor, as well as gifting ideas for various pieces.
INTRODUCTION
Willow Tree figurines lend themselves well to any style of decor (country, modern, etc.) and to many seasonal themes. Because most pieces are painted in neutral colors and are very sleek in design, they can be paired with many different seasonal props. My favorite time to decorate is during Autumn, when I can pair these beauties with leaves and harvest bounty.
In this guide, I will briefly discuss my collection and how these pieces were gifted to me. I will also impart some decorating ideas for the collector.
CAST OF CHARACTERS
The figurines that are appearing in this guide are as shown in the intro photo above, starting at the left:
- New Life (2000) - Given to my husband and I after the birth of our child.
- Hope (2004) - Given to me by my 3 year old son at Mother's Day.
- Heart of Gold (2004) - Given to me at Christmas time by my husband.
- Angel's Embrace (2002) - Given to me after the birth of my child.
Also appearing, are the figurines shown in the photo below, starting at the left:
- Angel of Friendship (1999) - Given to me by a dear friend. (My first Willow Tree!)
- Tenderness (2001) - Given to me by my husband when my son turned 1 year old.
- Angel of Miracles (2002) - Given to me by my parents. (It is difficult to see that this angel is holding a newly hatched chick.
- Angel of Learning (1999) - Given to me by my husband because of my love of books and my volunteer teaching. This is the ornament version.
DECORATING
Willow Tree Figurines were designed and crafted to give the appearance of carved wood, and therefore, I like to pair them with natural props such as wooden flowers, pumpkins, and leaves. The photos above show the normal state of my figurines paired with wooden painted tulips. The photos below will show them as they appear during the Autumn months.
Wood Land Scene
When I design a woodland scene for my figurines, I like to start with a simple leafy garland that I drape around the figurines. I will set the shorter figurines on top of the leaves to keep them from being hidden behind the foliage. The key here for me is to add some depth to the scene.
Next, I will add in some foliage bunches and gourds or pumpkins to add some contrast. If you can tell below, I also added in another figurine in order to balance out pumpkin I placed in the scene.
Lastly, I used some experimentation and switched out a few of my figurines to achieve the effect I was looking for. Willow Tree Figurines are great for decorating because they come in varying heights and widths and with varying numbers of people. They can be paired together in very interesting ways.
Simple Groupings
There are really no rules for decorating with figurines, other than to achieve a balance between color, size and number. If your collection is sparse, or you like to distribute your collection around the house or room, you can also decorate with smaller groupings of figurines. (See the photos below for examples.)
One Figurine
The New Life figurine is a good one to use as a single because it contain three (3) people. Odd numbers of items are perfect for decorating because they are more interesting than even numbers. In the photo above, I have used this single figurine with a base of leaves all around for a natural effect.
In the photo above, I have used one figurine with two other props (pumpkins) of different sizes. The grouping is very interesting, and somewhat unbalanced, but is good for the end of a mantle or a shelf of books.
Two Figurines
In this grouping, I have two(2) figurines which together total three (3) people and a natural base of leaves and a small pine cone. In retrospect, I should have placed the little boy closer to the mother. Still, I think this looks like a young mother with two (2) young children.
Groupings of Groupings
An odd number of groupings can be placed together in order to achieve a "grouping of groupings" as shown in the photo below.
Whimsical
I took the liberty of setting up a whimsical pumpkin patch for my last display. Getting "Hope" to stand on top of a pumpkin was very tricky and I don't recommend it to anyone. "Hope" had an unfortunate accident and lost his poor little hand. Hopefully, I will find it soon and I will reunite them both.
Conclusion
Willow Tree figurines are wonderful pieces for autumn decorating. Their varied sizes and shapes allow for many varying displays and decor opportunities. Enjoy your Willow Tree. I do!
