An automatic and self winding is a quality watch that never needs a battery or winding every 24 hours. However it is required that you wind the main spring approximately 40 times by the wind stem before using it for the first time. This will pre load the main spring  and the motion of the wearer's arm will keep it running for a few days. If an automatic watch is not worn for a day or two, it will wind down and need to be wound by hand to get it started again.
