Are *You* Tired Of Worrying Every Time You Go Camping?

Who Else Wants Trustworthy Tips On Staying Safe Around 'Smokey The Bear'?

Wouldn't *YOU* love to be able to camp out in bear country without having to worry about whether you and your loved ones are safe or not?

Well, *You* Don't Have To Worry Anymore!

In this guide, we are going to present some guidelines to help you avoid a nasty encounter with Yogi The Bear and Boo-Boo.   Here are some tips to keep you safe around those furry bruins:

Mr. Ranger, Sir! How Can I be 'Smarter Than The Average Bear?'

What 'Mr. Ranger, Sir' Wants *YOU* To Know About Bears:

  1. Bears don't like suprises!  If you are in bear country, make lots of noise. Do your best to let bears know you are around.  Try to travel in a group if possible.  Try to stay away from fish or animal carcasses.  The bear may try to defend its catch.
  2. Don't fence bears in!  Give bears plenty of room.  If you get too close to a bear, it may feel threatened.
  3. Bears are always looking for their next meal!   Cook away from your tent.  Try to store all food away from your campsite.  Hang food out of reach of bears if possible, or store food in air-tight, bear-proof containers.
  4. Avoid smelly food like bacon and smoked fish.  Burn garbage completely in a hot fire and pack out the remains.
  5. If a bear approaches while you are fishing, stop fishing.  If you have a fish on your line, don't let it splash.  If that is not possible, cut your line.

Close Encounters Of A Yogi Kind:  Avoiding Danger:

  1. If you see a bear, avoid it if you can.  Give the bear every  opportunity to avoid you.  If a bear gets close, stay calm and collected.  It probably will not attack you.  You are likely not in any danger.  Most bears instinctively protect their food, cubs, or personal space.

You Should:

  1. Identify yourself.  Talk to the bear in a normal voice.  Wave your arms.  If the bear cannot tell what you are, it may come closer or stand on its hind legs, to get a better look or smell.  Standing bears are usually just curious, not threatening.  You may try to back away diagonally.  If the bear follows, stop and hold your ground.

You Should NOT:

  1. Dont' run.  Bears can run at speeds up to 35 mph.  They will chase fleeing animals , like dogs do.  Bears often make bluff charges, withing 10 feet or so, without touching their perceived adversary.  Keep waving your arms and talking to the bear.  If the bear gets too close, raise your voice and be more aggressive.  Bang pots and pans.  Use noisemakers.  It is important not to imitate bear sounds or make a high-pitched squeal.

If You Are Attacked:

  • You have two choices: play dead or fight back.
  • Your best choice depends on whether the bear is playing dead or seeking food.
  • Play dead if you are attacked by a grizzly bear you have suprised, encountered on a carcass, or any female bear that seems to be protecting cubs.
  • Lie flat on your stomach or curl up in a ball with your hands behind your neck.
  • Remain motionless as long as possible.  If you move, the bear may see or hear you and return and attack you again.
  • In rare cases, lone black or grizzly bears may see a human being as potential food.
  • Fight any bear that follows you or breaks into a tent or building.
  • You should fight any black bear, regardless of circumstances.

To help you cook safely in bear country, there are some very neat Camp Stoves that will partially shield smells and are easy to clean up after.
