How To Use Your Special Greist Attachments

Greist has been making sewing machine attachments for a long time and, little did I know until recently, they also made sewing machines. They called these the "Improved Singer". The competition was strong during the "sewing machine wars".

Greist furnished each sewing machine with the following attachments:

  • Foot hemmer and feller
  • Braider
  • Twelve Needles
  • Six bobbins
  • Screw driver
  • oil can and oil
  • extra check spring
  • extra throat plate
  • a gauge and gauge screw
  • wrench
  • quilter
  • instruction book

All of the extra attachments needed one crucial piece to place all the others on the sewing machine - the Attachment Foot

The instructions from this 1957 book* are as follows (somewhat paraphrased for clarity):

To attach the Binder, Edgestitcher, and the Hemmers to your sewing machine, you must first remove the regular presser foot and replace it with the Attachment Foot (see why it is crucial?). If you look at your Attachment Foot you will see a large screw on the back of it with a clamping head that does extend to the front. When you press this screw forward against the back of the Attachment Foot, a space appears between the attachment foot and the end of the clamping head. This space is just large enough for you to slip the new attachment into place.

After you have placed the Attachment Foot on the machine, press the screw forward and slip the large hole in the Binder, Edgestitcher, or Hemmers over the clamping head. Note the photos to help you a little. Slide the attachment to the left as far as possible and tighten the screw so the new attachment is firmly held in place. The slot in each attachment lets you move it from left to right so you can stitch close to an edge or away from it. Just loosen the screw at the back, move the attachment the desired distance, and tighten the screw.

If you have a vintage or beloved sewing machine of your mother or grandmother, more than likely you will have some Greist attachments with it. Hunt down your Attachment Foot since it is the "special piece" for using your other attachments.

Just a wonderful thing to know when you are buying attachments over the internet for your rotary machine. Always ask or check the pictures since you will need this Attachment Foot to use those special attachments.

I do hope this was valuable to you. I love to learn about these wonderful attachments, whether they are Greist or Singer. They all do a beautiful job.

I have written several electronic books about attachments and you can find them, along with vintage attachments, at my eBay store. Please drop by and browse around The Sew Box.
