ASSEMBLY see fig. 1
-
Using the two screws (B) provided, attach the top ornamental ring (A) to the backside of the Astrolabe Dial Plate (C) as shown. Turn screws slowly until ornament is snug- do not over-tighten.
RADIO CONTROLLED CLOCK SETTING PROCEDURE see fig. 2
-
SET CLOCK TO NEAREST HOUR - Using the grey adjustment wheel (A) on the bak of the movement, set the clock hands to read precisely to the nearest hour (Ex: If the time is 2:45 set the clock to 3:00; if the time is 3:20 set the clock to 3:00). Using the adjustment wheel the hands can be moved in either direction, but the last 15 minutes of adjustment should be turned in the clockwise direction to minimize gear play.
-
USE RED BUTTON TO IDENTITY HAND POSITION - Insert the battery and wait 3-5 seconds. Then quickly press the red button 4-5 times (B). This tells the movement's microprocessor that the minute hand is at the 12 and turns on the receiver.
NOTE: After the above setting process has been completed, the clock will begin to seek out the time signal broadcast. Once the time signal has been received by the clock, you should hear a beep sound repeating every other second and the minute hand will begin to advance (8 times speed) or slow (1/5 speed) down, as necessary, until the clock sets itself to the correct time. If you do not hear a beep or if you hear a constant or erratic sound, see FINDING GOOD LOCATION further down in this guide and repeat the setting procedure.
ALTERNATE (EASY) SETTING PROCEDURE
-
SET THE CLOCK TO YOUR LOCAL TIME - Using the grey adjustment wheel on the back of the movement, position the clock hands to read teh correct or desired time.
-
INSERT BATTERY - Noting proper battery direction, insert the battery and be sure to NOT press the red button during the next 15 minutes.
NOTE: The electronics will assume that the clock was set to the correct or user's desired time with the alternatre (easy) setting instructions, for precise time with Colorado follow the radio controlled clock setting procedures at the beginning of this guide. The clock will use the radio signal to precisely maintain that set time and to automatically adjust for daylight savings time. In other words, if the clock is set on time, then it will always be on time; if it is set five minutes fast, then it will always be five minutes fast even after daylight savings time.
NOTE: When changing the batteries repeat the setting procedure. If at any time you make a mistake setting the clock, remove the battery and briefly insert it backwards for one (1) second then remove the battery, re-insert in the correct position, and follow the setting procedures.
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BY-PASS
If you live in an area of the country that does not observe the normal Daylight Savings Time changes, you have the option to by-pass (stop) the clocks automatic Daylight Savings Time adjustments by pressing and holding down the red button while inserting the battery. After the battery is in then release the red button and follow the clock setting procedures as normal.
FINDING A GOOD LOCATION
The clock movement has a very specialized AM radio receiver that it tuned to receive the coordinated universal time signal that is broadcast from WWVB (60KHVZ) in Fort Collins, Colorado. The WWVB signal and reception can at times be effected by weater conditions, electrical interference, solar conditions and the position of the clocks antenna. Although the clock can work in most locations, the number of times that it corrects itself to the coordinated universal time signal may depend on its location. This reception is especially important for the automatic adjustments for daylight savings time, which should occur between 2:05 and 2:15 AM Eastern Time on the appropriate days, but may be delayed until a valid signal is received.
To aid in finding areas or walls with better reception, the movement has an audible beeper, which can be activated by pressing the red button after the clock has been set but before teh clock has been synchronized with atomic time. Each time the red button is pressed (during this time); it will activate the beeper for about 30 seconds. The beeper sound represents the actual signal being received. A good signal has one beep precisely every second and sounds similar to a heart beat.
After pressing the Red Button, if you hear the following:
-
No beeping or constant - Means that there is either a very strong constant interference or no signal is being received.
-
Static or erratic sound - Means that there is interference that is equal to or greater than the WWVB signal.
-
On-Off pulse every second - Means a good signal is being received.
After you have activated the beeper, slowly move the unit around (move the unit as if you were in slow motion so that the electronics have time to respond to the changes in reception) until the desired beep pattern is achieved. Best locations are normally found when the Face or Back of the clock is aimed directly towards Fort Collins, Colorado and where metal objects or metal screens are not close to the clock or blocking the line between Fort Collins and the clock. Many electronic appliances such as computers, TV's, microwaves, power lines, etc. can interfere with the clock's reception. To minimize the effect of electronic appliance interference, do not place the clock within three feet of any such devices or wiring.
Reception indicators will change with the weather conditions, seasons, time of day, and solar activity. So if you do not find a good reception area the first time that you try, try again a little later. As a general rule, the best reception is at night or just before or after sunrise or sunset. There are areas and times of extremely poor reception, where it may take a few days before a signal is received. Also on rare occasions the WWVB transmitter is turned off for repair or maintenance.
WALL MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS
Hardware is provided for most wall mounting applications. It is recommended that whenever possible an interior wall stud or similar wooden wall/siding surface be located and used for mounting.
TO MOUNT TO A SOLID WALL:
-
Drill a 1/16 inch pilot hole in desired location.
-
Use a Philips screwdriver to turn the included screw into the wall hole leaving approximately a 1/4 inch gap between the wall and the backside of the screw head.
-
Position the hanger located on the backside of the clock onto the wall screw and move side to side within the teeth until the clock hangs level.
TO MOUNT TO AN INTERIOR HOLLOW (DRYWALL) OR MASONARY WALL:
-
Drill a 1/4 inch hole into the wall at the desired location.
-
Tap the included plastic wall anchor into the hole until flush with the wall surface.
-
Use a Philips screwdriver to turn the included screw into the wall anchor leaving approximately a 1/4 inch gap between the wall and the backside of the screw head.
-
Position the hanger located on the backside of the clock onto the wall screw and move side to side within the teeth until the clock hangs level.
NOTE: The top ornamental ring is not designed to function as a hanging piece. Be sure to use the saw-tooth hanger provided on the backside of the dial plate.
