Asimina triloba Paw Paw Seed Geminating Tips
You must first stratify the seeds. For more information on stratification, look for my guide to germinating stubborn seeds.
A. triloba seeds are quite easy to stratify with a moist paper towel or sphagnum moss & a zip seal baggie. Put the seeds in the bag & stratify them at 41F degrees for 60 to 90 days. This is usually done by putting them into a refridgerator for the proper length of time.
If you wish to forego stratification you can plant them directly into the growing medium & they will sprout in the spring.
They enjoy rich soil like you would find in the forest. If forest soil is collected it needs to be baked to kill off the bad things. I have heard they grow in tropical forests. They like some shade but I have read that they can be grown in full sun. I would test it on one by gradually exposing it to more sun every 2 or 3 days. I do recommend bringing the trees indoors their first winter.
Here in WV if you know what to look for, you can find fruit in the woods all over the place. You have to be lucky to find any fruit because the squirrels, deer, raccoons and other critters get most them. The trick to the fruit is.... wait until it frosts. Then pick the fruit to be eaten. Thats how you know they are done. Mother Nature tells you.
