Baseball Glove Padding
The evolution of the baseball glove had its origins in the late 1870's as a glove for the hand with the fingers and thumb removed and some padding in the palm. Later when overhand pitching was in use in the 1880's, catchers began to use heavier padded gloves. The padding for gloves also evolved from bulk cotton and bulk wool to covered tubing, jute, pressed wool felt, and asbestos felt. For more information see The Evolution of the Baseball Glove at the Rawlings webpage.
