NATIVE AMERICAN ARTIFACT AUTHENTICATORS

1. AAA Native American Auctions - A live auction house in Mobridge South Dakota that issues COAs on items they auction for consignors. I have no answers and lots of questions about the group and the documents they issue. Are they qualified to certify authenticity? Would I accept a COA from an organization like this? Should I sell as authentic anything that carries one of their certificates?

2. ANACA - This group appeared out of no where a few months ago. They claim to subscribe to authentic artifact only principals and ask the same of their membership. Problem is I know of no members. There is no valid address for the group and no board of directors or identifiable leadership of any kind. Is it a ruse to sell authentication services? The authenticator? they promote in their literature is Shelley Reagan. The more I try and find out about the group, the more suspicious I am that Reagan is the founder and sole member.

3. Anderson, Byron - A couple years ago, COAs issued by this person were showing up on ebay quite often. I haven’t seen one in a while and we can all be thankful for that. On his COA he first claimed to have a degree in science. It was quickly determined that he did not. He then amended the COA to read that he had over 20 years experience in authenticating artifacts and was working on a degree in science. Again, that statement was proven to be inaccurate. Several of the pieces with his papers were bought and sent to reputable authenticators and have been killed. None of his available certs have any personal data like address, phone number or web site on them, so I have no contact info on him.

4. Anderson, Son - sonandersonartifacts.com - P.O. Box 4674 Donalsonville, GA. 31745 If you need any additional info on this well known regional authenticator and prolific writer/publisher, you can obtain it on his website above.

5. Arnold, Bill - PO Box 7 Kempner, Texas 76539  Many of you know this one better by his ebay handle Txdiggerbill. I believe he only issues COAs for personal finds.  I have a copy of COA, but no room to post here.

6. Asmussen, Larry - The only info I have on this one is that he is supposed to work out of Oregon. If anyone has any contact or web info they’d like to share, just let me know. I do not have a copy of one of his COAs nor have I ever seen one.

7. Authenticators Of The World - Its hard to believe some of the better known sellers on ebay actually offer pieces with COAs from this ????. Refer to the COA copy below. Signature looks like John Mitchell whoever that is. No contact info other than a name scrawled on a piece of paper. A valid and value adding document?

8. Baker, Jeff - PO Box 772 Paragould, Arkansas 72451-0772, Ph (870) 239-9722.

15. Brockman, William - Ritter, Floyd - Weldon, Leonard  I have a copy of a COA signed by these 3.  The document has no business name, no organization name, no address, ph number or any other contact info other than an emblazened Indian Artifacts logo and the statement, "Documented by an experienced jury of experts" ?????  The multiple eye technique again which I like, but what good is it if no one is willing to provide contact info?  Where is the cert recorded and are any records kept by these self appointed experts?

Have seen several different signatures on available certs and document reminds me of a wayward prescription pad, anyone can tear a copy off, fill in the details and sign. 41. Goff, Tommy - 215 Goff Lane Texarkana, Tx 75501 Ph 903-832-7499.  I attended a live auction out west on 6-21-08 and several artifacts bearing this individuals COAs were sold there.  I didn't have a camera and so didn't get a pic of the coa.  The pieces I examined with these COAs were highly suspect in my opinion.  A clovis with no basal grinding and no visible patination or scar ridge wear and a Scottsbluff that looked like it was made yesterday.  I had never heard of this auctenticator before attending this sale and have no knowledge of his abilities or experience.

Note there is no contact info on the authenticator. The form isn't dated, isn't serialized, doesn't type the arrowhead or offer any provenance in its description. Totally bogus looking authentication paper. Sorry for the poor legibility, but I'm working with second generation pics and ebay's size limitations.

88. Relic Authenticators Of America - Copy of COA on file….Wow a whole panel of unidentified experts have evaluated the artifacts in question and deemed them authentic. Now who wouldn’t believe that especially since it even has an official looking seal just like the big boys? Great concept as I believe multiple eyes should review high end pieces before ever issuing a cert for them, but they have to identify themselves by signing the documents and providing contact information on themselves.

89. Retort, Robert - Out of Ohio I believe. No COA or contact info.

Seller claims to be a certified expert and appraiser of arrowheads. Lists an auction for an African mask and claims to be a certified expert of everything African.
