Everything you ever wanted to know about the Arena Football League, but didn't know where to look! How the indoor AFL game differs from its outside NFL counterpart. Trading cards of your favorite teams and players.

Cards

For the first time ever at the end of the 2005 season, Upper Deck released a league wide set of Arena Football cards. The 90 card base set features stars of all the teams. Various insert sets tell the history of the previous season and the AFL itself including players that continued their careers in the NFL. For 2006, Upper Deck increased the set size to 190 cards to include more players for each team.  The also upped the game with better inserts including autographed and piece of jersey cards. Much anticipation and excitement is expected for the 2007 release scheduled for March by Upper Deck.  This will cause high demand for the inaugural cards from the years before. Some teams had their own sets before Upper Deck took over, but nothing of the quality and value that's on the market now.  Shop for arena football today!

Personal

After watching some games on NBC in 2004, we just had to go see live action.  We were hooked!  Unlike the outdoor game, it is even better in person.  The speed of the players is amazing as everything happens quickly.  Plus, the overall entertainment aspect of the entire experience was incredible.  The AFL prides itself on being the most fan friendly sport available and they should be.  From free autograph sessions after each game were players are required to attend (no T.O. personalities here), to the cheap seats ($7 or so) that aren't that far away.  Remember you are indoors where the weather can't damper your families enjoyment of the game.  Make sure you are paying attention or you might miss a play or even a football coming right at you!  Keep it as the announcer yells "souvenir!"  Hey look, that's you on the jumbo-tron with everyone cheering your catch.

Rules

  • The indoor field is a padded surface 85 feet wide by 150 feet long with end zones just 24 feet deep. Unlike the NFL 18.5' wide goal posts, the arena league kickers must shoot at a target just 9' wide! The crossbar is also a full five feet higher at 15'. Next to the goal posts are 30x32' rebound nets to keep the ball in play. Foam rubber walls along the fields length are 4' high to also keep the action going.
  • The AFL football is made by Spalding and has the same size and weight restrictions as the NFL.
  • Just eight players take the field on each side of the ball and most of them are required to play both offense and defense. The kicker, quarterback, offensive specialist, and two defensive specialists are the only ones who get some rest during the game. One substitution per quarter for everyone else!
  • The clock doesn't stop during each of four 15 minute quarters except for penalties, injuries, timeouts, or the last minute of each half. Three timeouts per team per half of game play may be used.
  • Kickoffs are from the goal line and punting is illegal! On fourth down the team must attempt a field goal or run a regular play.
  • One foot must remain inbounds on all passing plays and using the rebound net to your advantage is fine (not to mention fun). Your receivers and kick returner need to be good "rebounders" for this reason.
  • Overtime guarantees each team a possession of the ball. If still tied, the next score wins.
  • A standard playoff round system is used at the end of the season to see which two teams will meet at the ArenaBowl to earn their championship.

"For those who have never been to a Force game. This is not the NFL so quit comparing it to the NFL. This is still football but it's a very different flavor. It's like saying Pizza (AFL) stinks when all you've ever had is Spaghetti (NFL) and Lasagna (College). Go on. Have a slice of pizza."
