It seems that every time you turn on the news there is a story and heart-breaking pictures of people losing everything due to a natural disaster or fire. No one seems to be safe, it could happen anywhere at anytime. Nature is an equal opportunity destroyer. Whether its a hurricane, flood, tornado, earthquake, fire, theft, or even an act of war or terrorism, if this happens to you where do you begin? Everyone should be prepared in the event of any type of disaster or emergency. Investing a little time and energy now can save a lot of heartache and headaches later. Advances in technology have made this a little easier to prepare for great personal loss.

Do you keep your personal and important documents in a strong box, a safe, your PC, a desk, or safety deposit box? We all organize differently, but what happens if all your possessions and documents are ruined?  Would you remember policy numbers or phone numbers, or maybe worst of all what about your most treasured photos and videos? Grab your digital camera and take a picture of every room in your house.  Take a picture of every valuable such as antiques, jewelry, or expensive collectibles. Do you have appraisals for these items?  Gather all your important papers and documents such as :

  1. Birth Certificate
  2. Passport
  3. License
  4. Taxes
  5. Stock and Bonds
  6. Insurance Policies ( at least a policy number and a phone number)
  7. Credit Cards with phone numbers
  8. Receipts- especially for major purchases
  9. Wills
  10. Other healthcare papers such as Living Will or DNR forms etc
  11. Legal documents

The list is endless. Any documents that are important to you and your family. Take this information and put it on a flash drive, or CD or MP4 player or PDA, any media of your choice. Have a back up copy and store one outside your home in the event of a personal disaster. This can help with insurance adjustors, taxes, estate planning, thefts and maybe even identity theft. This will be a concrete and documented proof of your belongings. Getting in the habit of keeping a digital record is a smart and timesaving task that will be rewarding even if you never have to use it.

An excellent  solution is a portable medical flash drive made by SGMS Corp. These mini USB drives come preloaded with an easy to use medical program designed to hold all your medical history.  They will work with Windows, Mac or Linux and just plug in to any USB port. No special software needed. These devices are specifically designed for medical emergencies to inform first responders of  lifesaving medical history to accurately treat any emergency. All your history and medications and diagnostic tests can be stored on this personal flash drive. Only the information YOU specify will be accessed. The drives are encrypted and password protected so your personal information and documentation is separate from your medical history. All of the above personal documentation can be put on these drives and you have the added security of having everything on one drive.

The medical flash drives come in several different models such as keychains, dogtags, bracelets and are designed to be carried with you at all times. They are especially essential for older people, Alzheimers, Autism, Down Syndrome, allergies, and heart conditions to name a few.  They make a great gift for everyone. It is smart to have a back up in case they get lost or damaged, and its important to Keep them up to date. This way wherever you are you have an accurate medical record along with any other imformation you choose to store on them. Have peace of mind and take charge of your life however you choose to store your information. You will be glad you did.
