When a parent is anxiously preparing for the arrival of a new baby, many thoughts come to mind about what is good, what is bad, and what is safe and what is not safe.  When it comes to setting up the baby's crib, many parents have concerns about whether or not reusing a crib mattress is safe for their baby.  This article will provide some information and answers about what you should think about when reusing a crib mattress in your baby's crib.

Many studies have shown that reusing a crib mattress is connected to a higher risk of SIDS.  While many factors can contribute to SIDS, the crib mattress is not the only factor to be concerned with when trying to prevent SIDS occurrence.  Most of the research shows that a new, firm crib mattress is a key component to keeping baby safe and comfortable.  In spite of this, I have known of several friends and family members who have reused crib mattresses without any problems.

The theory against reusing crib mattresses is that used mattresses can trap bacteria and germs that could infect the baby and cause some serious health problems or death.  Other studies have shown that when babies sleep on fire-resistant mattresses, the chemicals that make the mattress fire retardant emit toxins that can poison a baby's lungs and cause problems as well. When speaking with other parents, most tend to agree that chemicals of any kind near a newborn baby are not safe.  However, these same parents willingly reused crib mattresses and did not feel that they were putting their babies in any kind of danger by doing so.

The bottom line about reusing a crib mattress is to do so at your own risk, but take whatever precautions necessary to prevent any type of injury or harm to your baby.  If you do plan to reuse a crib mattress, be sure to take the following steps:

-Inspect the mattress thoroughly to make sure there are no rips, tears, openings, or exposed parts.

-If the mattress has any stains, do not reuse it.

-Check the shape and form of the mattress.  Any type of dent, sag, or unevenness should be not be present.

-Be sure the manufacturer tags are still attached.  If that particular mattress was recalled for any reason, you will have all the necessary information.

-Use a mattress cover.  There are now specially designed mattress covers to prevent mattresses from emitting chemicals that could be harmful to baby.

If you have any doubts, remember to always trust your gut.  Your mommy or daddy instincts will tell you what you should do.  Good luck to you and your family, and may your baby sleep peacefully... the whole night through!!!
