Glucosamine has been shown to be very beneficial in helping animals with joint pain. Glucoamine may even help rebuild cartilage that has been damaged. Glucosamine is available from many sources for a wide range of prices. People often presume the cheaper products are inexpensive generics. Absolutely nothing could be further from the truth. All glucosamine products are not equal.
I repeat, all glucosamine products are not equal. Glucosamine is classified as a food supplement. This gives the manufacturer tremendous latitude in processing glucosamine. As a food additive, glucosamine must be safe but does not have to meet any standards in relieving joint pain. The easiest way to create a cheap product is dilute the concentration with cheap, safe ingredients. The practice of adding useless fillers and gums is common.
The second way to sell a cheap product is by marketing glucosamine as a salt. Glucosamine as a salt is cheap. If you check the label and see Glucosamine Sulfate * KCl or Glucosamine Sulfate * NaCl or Glucosamine Sulfate as a Salt, then 30% or more of the glucosamine is bound to table salt in an inactive or unavailable form. If it is unavailable to the body as a salt, then these products are not inexpensive but worthless. Ready to hear how it becomes even more confusing? The manufacturers can legally say that they are providing an adequate dosage even if the product is bound to salts and are unavailable to the animal. These deceptive (but unfortunately legal) practices are found in cheap glucosamine products. High quality products such as GLC1000 or Promotion make a difference in the clinical results and control of pain in our pets.
