Looking to buy, sell or fix an Apple Airport Base Station ? Unsure which model is which and what parts are interchangeable ? Apple so far has made 4 different models of Airport Base Stations.

- The Original Airport Base Station (Graphite)(M5757)

  • Same Graphite color as the first G4 Graphite Tower Power Macs
  • Up to 10 users
  • 40-bit encryption
  • 56k modem built in
  • WiFi 802.11b only

- The "Snow" DUAL Ethernet Airport Base Station (M8440)

  • Snow White in color like iBooks G3 & G4
  • Up to 50 users
  • 128-bit encryption
  • 56k modem built in
  • WiFi 802.11b only
  • extra ethernet port for printers or other RJ-45 perhipihals
  • The Airport Card inside this model is the same the "Original Airport Card" and thus many people canabilize this model for it's card and use it in their powerbooks and towers

- The Airport "Extreme" Base Station (Model # A1034)

  • Snow White in color like the iBooks G3 & G4
  • up to 50 users
  • 128-bit encryption
  • WiFi 802.11g & backwards compatible with 802.11b
  • Mac OS X 10.1.5 or higher some features like WPA require minimum 10.3 or higher
3 different configurations all called the same "Airport Extreme Base Station"
  1. two ethernet, one usb port (Part # M8930LL/A)
  2. two ethernet, one sub port, one 56k modem port, external antenna connector (Part # M8799LL/A)
  3. two ethernet, one sub port, one 56k modem port, external antenna connector, powered by the ethernet cable (Part #M9397LL/A)
The prices for the 3 different models differ greatly because of the configurations, especially the "PoE power over ethernet"

- The Airport "Express" Base Station(Model #A1084)(Part #M9470/LL/A)

  • looks more like a power adapter for a powerbook, ipod
  • up to 10 users
  • 128-bit encryption
  • WiFI 802.11g & backwards compatible with 802.11b
  • ethernet port, usb port, mini audio jack for analog or digitial sound

-  Airport Extreme Base Station MA073LL/A

  • Sold under the same name as the previous model A1034
  • newer faster thru put 802.11n backwards compatible with a,b and g
  • USB port
  • 4 ethernet ports

Comments and questions welcome, The 2 first Base Stations M5757 and M8440 share the same Power adapters. The internal cards are different on them, M5757 uses a Lucent Orinoco Wavelan type Card while M8440 uses the Original Apple Airport Card.
