To say this is a hard catagory to sell in is RIGHT. There is so many Antiques, you can never know them all. I have been lucky enough to talk to so many wise people that have been in the antique business for many years, trying to always take in what they share with me. Antiques take dedication and memory. To know what your looking at, and what circa it's from. I have come across so many antiques in my years of collecting, some I knew right away what they were and some just looked too interesting to pass up. Dedicate yourself to antiques, know what your looking at. Don't just jump in and say "I think it's antique", because most likely it's not. You should study, carry books to estates sales, or a small internet device. Something for research. It's not an easy gig.
But as for collectible, well anything can be collectible. Just depends if there's a market for the certain type of collectable. It's also not easy, but I can say it's a little easier. I've sold many collectables in my time. In antique and collectible stores mainly. Also at serval live auction houses, and so forth. From a small stick figure to a cookie jar. It just depends if the market is flooded or it's a rare piece that's desirable. I have had rare pieces that there's just not a market for.
To conclude, I would just take advice from anyone willing to give it. Listen to what people take about over a certain piece. Look it up before paying thousands of dollars for something that will not sell. But the most important part is RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH!
Hope I have helped
