Most of the antique trunks in the US were made in New England, mostly
Massachusetts. Boston and Worcester, Mass had several prominent manufacturers. All were made of wood and some had canvas or leather
on the outside with wooden slats also on the outside. Often you can date
these trunks by the copyright info on the front lock. People refer to the metal as tin but actually the metal is rolled steel. Wheels have been on trunks since about 1840. There are flat top and also dome or curved top trunks. The flat tops were the most common and they stacked easily on
the back of stagecoaches and trains luggage racks. The dome or hump back trunks were the cream of the crop as thy were made to only fit and balance on the top of a pile of trunks. Poorer people bought pine wood
trunks which damage much easier. A trunk is worth more unrestored, unless the work is done by a true professional. Many private parties restore a trunk and the end result is not pretty; their finished product looks artificial and has less worth. Flat top trunks are really cool to be used for the base of a glass coffee table. Shipping a trunk can often be
more expensive than the price of the trunk itself.
