PRESENT Modern, what is that?
In the 50’s and 60’s anything with fins or with an orbital look or
space age design was considered modern.

Then came the 60’s and 70’s and organic looking and high textures were modern. As we now know those times are considered post-retro.
So what is modern today will someday be classified as by some name years from now, maybe the “cyber-era”, “computer age” or the “new stone age”.
Whatever it becomes known as it will leave its mark in jewelry history as a time in which many fine jewelers made fine art jewelry with some of the most creatively carved gemstones, revival of old art forms of construction, and use of various metals the world has ever been exposed to.
What’s Next… 2000 and Beyond
With the turn of another century, it’s time for a new title to
be added to our list of design periods.
This next era might be called the techno era, or the computer era, the designers have not quite figured it out as of yet, but I’m sure that they will very soon.
We have seen a rebirth of almost everything that has been done in the past, from copies of Georgian to the space age, sleek and simple to overly ornate; gem carvings though to be impossible to do, you name it and the craftspeople of today can do it, make it or duplicate it. With the on slot of computer aided design (CAD) programs I think the computer era is fitting!
