Purchasing antique needlework on Ebay can be fun and exciting. If you're just looking for something that pleases you, you'll have an easy time by merely looking at the photos and reading well-written descriptions. However, if you're a true sampler collector or are purchasing to resell or for investment purposes, there are some things to watch for and some things to watch out for. First, make sure the stitching is done on linen (not Aida). Aida cloth was invented in the 20th century, and therefore is not considered truly antique. Second, be mindful of holes and stains. Holes and stains are generally okay and can add to the overall beauty of the item, but as you probably have guessed, they normally bring down the price of the sampler. Finally, you might ask to see the stitching on the back of the item, as the neatness of the back can be an indication of the neatness and experience of the stitcher and thus the quality of the stitching. But you should always be reminded that decorators say to only hang what you love on your walls, so if it pleases you, ask questions first and then bid if you are satisfied.
