Alternative Fuels Hydrogen Kit for Car Good or Bad
This is just our experience with the kit so far. We are trying it on another vehicle as of 9-9-08. I am not saying one way or another if you should try this for your vehicles or what plans you should use. We also tried burning oil in our Diesel Bronco - it was easy but not sure if it is really environmentally friendly - and it gave me headachs.
Our Bronco is an older (1984) soft top and we put a Diesel engine with Stick shift trany in it. This is Husbands Toy. We checked to use veggie oil but have no supply so that was out - every place that uses it and disposes of it has been locked up with a regular buyer already. We did some checking and found that it is possible to burn used motor oil if it has been properly treated. We filtered it down to .5 microns and mixed it 50/50 with diesel.
The bronco ran great! But smoked like a smoldering fire when you step on it.
This was a concern for environmental reasons but our biggest concern as was the issue that you could smell it inside and we were getting sinus headaches. That was the end of that. It is back in the barn till spring and our next adventure with it.
Next we did investigations into Hydrogen kits and if it would work on any of our vehicles.
We ordered what we needed and from a free online instruction manual built one for the 1996 Jeep GC. After playing with it in the garage and seeing how it did put out fumes it was ready to be installed and our first trial would be a 7 hour trip to Canada.
We know what our usual mileage is and how the Jeep handles so this was a great trial.
At first we thought we were getting better mileage - not the 10-15 as hoped for but looked like it might have been 2-3 more. Unfortunately we discovered the computer was giving false information and we were actually getting less then 16 mpg!
We unhooked it for the rest of the trip to experiment more at home and not far from home/garage.
At home on the half hour drive to work we did more tests. We also did more research and found that yes the computer is one major issue.
Newer vehicles have oxygen sensors that analyze the exhaust output. With the hydro system, the engine burns more of the gasoline that goes through the engine. Hydrogen is very explosive, far more than gasoline, so when THAT burns, it helps to burn more of the gas. Gas engines are actually very inefficient. Anyway, the exhaust comes out cleaner so the computer thinks that it is not getting enough gas, so it pumps more in. That is why our 4 litre engine got worse mileage.
Today it was installed on a 1985 Pontiac Parisienne (My son's car) it is older and no computer to mess with fuel system. He will be taking a trip soon and since he already knows his estimated mileage for the trip he will be able to see if there is any advantage to the system on an older car. The engine is a 5 liter Chevy engine, a 305, with a 4-barrel quadrajunk...I mean Quadrajet, and the hydrogen output hose goes through the base of the air cleaner. It then gets sucked through the engine.
I will update this in 3 weeks when he is back.
We have found that this system is ok for short trips and around town
On the Jeep on the long haul we noticed our milage actually was worse - the computer was sensing that it didnt have enough fuel due to such a clean burn and would force the injectors to add more fuel (this is our best guess)
On the Parisienne we noticed the same issue. Since we do more long distance driving then short trips we have found this not a good thing for us at this time and removed the systems from our vehicles.
we also worked some with used oil fuel - but with out it being properly treated found it to be too dirty a fuel and are now back to regular fuel in all vehicles.
Will keep you posted on any new ideas we try.
