iPod

iPod is the reigning king of MP3 players in both features and popularity. The unit’s groundbreaking design and eye-popping capacity (the 5th generation iPod comes in 30GB and 60GB versions) have made this gadget a runaway success with music lovers. The 60GB model holds a whopping 15,000 songs—at four minutes per song, you could listen for six weeks straight without hearing a repeat. You even have space to back up important files from your computer.

It has never been easier to organize and navigate your music. iPod includes the latest version of iTunes for Windows and Mac, which lets you create playlists to suit your mood or the occasion. When you add new songs or change your playlists, the music will automatically update on your iPod the next time you connect it to your computer via the auto-sync feature.

The coolest feature of the 5th generation iPod is on an entirely different level. The newest version to hit the streets has video capability! Watch your favorite movies and television shows on an expanded 2.5-inch screen in over 65,000 colors. It holds up to 150 hours of video and can play anything in H.264 or MPEG-4 format. With the ability to download programs through the iTunes music service the very next day, you guarantee that you never miss your favorite show again.

iPod nano

Take what you know about iPod and shrink it. Now shrink it again and you’ve got the iPod nano. The newest member of the Apple family is 62% smaller than mini and 80% smaller than the original iPod, yet still supports eye-popping color and photo capabilities. The 4GB version holds up to 1,000 songs and comes in traditional white or sleek, stylish black.

Though it may be small, iPod nano packs a huge punch. At only 1.5 ounces, it holds up to three days’ worth of music, and plays for up to 14 hours between battery charges. The color display shows album art for the song you’re listening to, carries photos, podcasts and audiobooks, and syncs seamlessly with iTunes.

iPod has never been more functional, either. You’ll never miss an appointment again thanks to the calendar function, and you contacts are stored for easy access. The to-do list reminds you to grab bread and milk on the way home, games keep you occupied while standing in line, and the world clock lets you know what time it is no matter where you are. The nano connects to a host of iPod accessories, and since it supports the same type of connecting pin as iPod and iPod mini, your favorite extras are still compatible. Simply put, iPod nano is 100-percent iPod, and beyond.

iPod shuffle

Smaller than a pack of gum and weighing as little as a car key, the iPod shuffle is the most portable iPod yet. The 512MB USB flash drive holds 120 of your favorite songs, while the 1GB version holds twice that amount. The iPod shuffle is skip-free and offers up to 12 hours of playback, so you'll have all your favorite music wherever you go.

Adding songs is easy—just plug iPod shuffle directly into your computer's USB port and Autofill from your favorite playlist, or drag and drop specific must-have songs. You can play your tunes in order, or flip a switch to mix on the go. The Shuffle Songs setting lets you play your favorite songs in a different order every time to keep your mix fresh. A simple circular control lets you play, pause, repeat, skip and hold, so you are always in control of your music.

iPod photo

The original iPod with a color screen has a groundbreaking design and eye-popping capacity (it comes in 20GB and 60GB versions*).  This has made this gadget a runaway success with music lovers. The 60GB model holds a whopping 15,000 songs - at four minutes per song, you could listen for six weeks straight without hearing a repeat. With that kind of capacity, you can back up important files from your computer and still have room for all your favorite songs!

When music isn't enough, the 20 GB iPod carries up to 5,000 of your favorite digital images. Triple your capacity with the 60 GB model, which carries up to 25,000 digitized images. You can share them with your friends in vivid color right from the 2" LCD display, or hook your iPod up to a TV for a slideshow.

Although these models are discontinued, you can still find great deals for them on eBay!

iPod mini

The iPod mini is smaller than most cell phones and weighs only 3.6 ounces. With 25 minutes of skip protection and up to 18 hours of playtime on a single battery charge, it is always ready to go. And because the anodized aluminum case resists stains and scratches, you can stick the iPod mini in your purse or pocket without worries. Plus, it comes in four delectable colors.

The iPod mini's backlit LCD gives you the full song name and more, and the click wheel keeps all of your songs right where you want them—at your fingertips. Store up to 1,000 songs on the 4GB iPod mini or 1,500 songs on the 6GB version, you'll always have the right tune to suit your mood. Plus, the screen is perfect for playing the included games: Solitaire, Music Quiz, Brick and Parachute. When you need to focus more on work than play, the iPod mini is ready. You'll never miss an appointment again thanks to the calendar function, and your contacts are stored for easy access. The to-do list reminds you to grab the bread and milk on the way home and the alarm clock is ready for travel.

Like its big brother, the iPod mini features auto-synch and includes both a FireWire and a USB 2.0 cable for high-speed transfer from your Mac or PC, so you can move your entire music library in just seconds.

iPod songs and accessories

How will you listen to your iPod? The included earbuds are great, but to share your music, consider a wireless FM transmitter, a cassette adapter or travel speakers. A docking station with speakers lets you charge your player and spin tunes in one easy step. The iPod mini can use many of the same accessories as the iPod, so you can mix and match to meet your needs.

*Formatted capacity varies.

You may have noticed a disclaimer on MP3 players, and other devices, stating that "formatted capacity will vary." Formatted capacity may vary for a number of reasons. In some cases the MP3 players or other devices use a portion of the storage capacity for formatting purposes or for pre-loaded operating system needs. In some cases, the storage capacity in terms of "MB" or "GB" of MP3 players and other devices is measured differently from device to device, for example from computer operating system memory, or "RAM." The actual storage on any device is affected by a number of variables, including the length of any of the files or data stored on the device, and the type of file compression, if any, used in storing the device.
