ALL PURPOSE CAMP MIX
This tastes and bakes like Bisquick
- 9 cups all purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1/4 cup baking powder
- 2 cups shortening
Stir together flour, salt and baking powder. Add shortening and cut in with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Double bag in heavy duty plastic bags.
Use this mix in the following recipes. Substitute Bisquick if you wish.
PANCAKES
- 1-1/2 cups Camp Mix
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/4 cup powdered milk
- 1 egg
- 1 cup water
Blend dry ingredients. Add egg and water and mix well. Heat your griddle until a drop of water sizzles. Cook until golden brown, turning only once. Serve with your favorite syrup.
BREAD ON A STICK
Children will enjoy making this camp treat. It takes a little patience to cook slowly so that the outside doesn't burn before the middle cooks.
Add enough water to the Camp Mix to make a very stiff dough. Shape the dough into ribbons as thick as your little finger. Peel the end of green sticks. Heat the sticks over a low campfire briefly, flour and wind the ribbon of dough in a spiral around the end of the stick, pinching the dough together so it won't unwind. Toast over hot coals, turning to bake evenly. Slip off the stick when done and fill the hole with butter and jam.
EGG L'ORANGE
Cut off the top part of an orange and eat the fruit. Carefully clean out the empty orange shell and drop in a bit of butter inside. Break an egg or two into the orange cup and carefully place it on low coals until the eggs are cooked.
