Alex Gordon Rookie Card - KC Royals Alex Gordon Card!
Who is Alex Gordon and why is this Kansas City Royals rookie
becoming so popular? Better question - why is anything related to the
Kansas City Royals popular!

The answer is short and its bizarre... because Alex Gordon isn't
officially a Royals rookie! Instead, he is technically a prospect who
erroneously made his way into a baseball card set - making his limited
edition card worth over $2,000 on eBay! With an estimated 100 or so
Alex Gordon cards in production - they are a hot commodity and eBay
seems to be the only place to get one! There are also ESPN reportings
of people arbitraging Alex Gordon - buying the card for $1,4000 and
flipping it for nearly $2,500 on the site!
According to Darren Rovell of ESPN, the Alex Gordon Topps card is so
valuable because of a new MLB policy: "Last year, in part to reduce
confusion in the marketplace, the Major League Baseball Players
Association ruled that card manufacturers could make rookie cards only
of players who either made the 25-man roster or played in a major
league game the season before. Gordon didn't qualify either way. After
he led Nebraska into the College World Series, the No. 2 overall pick
in the 2005 draft didn't sign his contract -- including a $4 million
signing bonus -- until late September."
Blurb from ESPN's Daily Quickie: Baseball Card Snafu
Royals prospect Alex Gordon may never have an MLB career, but he's
already a legend in the baseball card industry. His card, which is only
available in a tiny supply due to a printing error, is selling for more
than $2,000.
(The story takes me back to my particularly dorky teens: Billy Ripken's
1989 Fleer card became the stuff of legend when it was discovered that
a prankster scrawled an obscenity on the knob of his bat in the photo.)
Exceprt from Darren Rovell's article on ESPN:
"Alex Gordon has yet to play a single game in the major leagues and yet
his rookie card is the hottest in all of baseball, selling for as much
as $2,550 in recent weeks.... "At the last second, we realized we had
made a mistake, so we pulled the cards, destroyed them by cutting out
the photo and then destroyed the plates," said Topps spokesman Clay
Luraschi... ewer than 20 of the Gordon cards have shown up for sale on
eBay, leading some in the collectibles industry to believe that the
card is as rare as they come. Luraschi is confident that fewer than 100
cards got out."
