This has been an interesting journey I have made into learning about the African Artwork I have listed on EBay.
I searched first for sites telling me about the different trees and woods that are available in Kenya Africa. Finding out the since the mid 1990s the mahogony woods are classified as rare and have become protected. When mahogony is used since then, the artisan has to provide info that it came from already fallen trees. The replacement wood is Neem, Jacaranda and Mango. These woods are grown and harvested specifically for the woodcarvers of Kenya to be able to continue their longlived trades.
Secondly I searched about the carvings themselves. The animals, yes even the ones done humorously, are all species they encounter in their country. The human beings represented in their art, are shown in their current life activities, weather it is in the wood carvings or in the batik on oilcloth art I have encountered.
Then I have encountered people who have journeyed there, telling of the open air markets where this art is created and sold, much like some of our flea markets here.
