With countless advertising and marketing opportunities available, how do you choose? You can buy pixels on a website, ad space on eBay auctions, magnets for cars and trucks, tattoos on various body parts, custom t-shirts and even sponsor bachelor parties. The possibilities are endless, but they also do not last long.
Be selective and look for items that will still be around in a couple years.
I have seen various name-my-horse auctions. If it is a well bred filly, it may be a good deal as she could become a great broodmare. Do not name a stud colt though, as he may be gelded/fixed and your namesake will not be able to carry on your name.
Also, consider purchasing items that will generate FREE advertising. Is the item you are considering unique enough to get free press? Will people be willing to drive to SEE what you have created or purchased?
Look for one-of-a-kind opportunities, as well as first-of-its kind opportunities. If it cannot be easily duplicated, then it is extra newsworthy.
Consider the list of the items that Golden Palace Casino and other large companies have recently purchased: cheese sandwiches, famous hotdogs, foreheads to permanently tattoo, a herd of cows to paint, a red paperclip, addicted to eBay Barbie, famous/infamous sports memorabilia.
Most of these items, by themselves, are worth very little until you add a catchy storyline and the internet buzz and eBay Pulse take over.
Simple items like these have put companies on the map with all the free advertising they received because of the media coverage!
Take a look through the Advertising section, as well as the Unusual and Weird sections of eBay. Don't bid on the first item that catches your eye. Watch the item then do a search in the completed auctions and current auctions to see if the item has been sold in the past and is just being duplicated.
Keep an eye on the news. Sometime hot eBay auctions make it to CNN and the AP. Bid early and you may see your company name highlighted as the current high bidder! Win and you may make headline news.
Don't believe me? The cheese sandwich was covered EVERYWHERE and the news reports are STILL everywhere. It has been almost 2 years. Do an internet search for Virgin Mary Cheese Sandwich and you will find news listings on the BBC, CBS, MSNBC, the UK Register, just to name a few.
Enjoy the hunt for the next big item! I hope you find it first and wish you success and lots of free advertising!
