In 1946, The Adventures of Superboy took over as the lead feature in Adventure comics , previous to this, Adventure comics had a number of different characters grace its pages , two different heroes named Sandman, Starman, and some great action packed characters & stories . Originally titled New Comics , ( a funny animal feature comic ) Later , re-named New Adventure Comics , then , finally Adventure Comics . With Issue # 103 started Superboy as the lead feature , where he would remain until issue #380 when Supergirl took over as lead feature ( Granted , from issue #300-380 Superboy shared Adventure with the amazingly popular Legion of super-heroes ) Superboy under went numberous changes over the years, starting out as a semi-serious character, to the more sci-fi edgyness of the legion series . I personally love the innocent aspect of the early issues, as a young teen, i always identified with both Clark Kent & Superboy .Lets compare the value of these scarce , early treasures to , Say, silver age MARVELS, Specifically "the amazing spider-man" ADVENTURE #103 The first issue in the Superboy series trends in the 2007 OVERSTREET at $300.00 in good, $600.00 in very good and $900.00 in fine , SPIDER-MAN #1 LISTS at $1025.00 in good , $2050.00 in very good, and $3075.00 in fine !!!! SPIDEY #1 is hardly scarce, given, its 17 years newer than the ADVENTURE ,and yet WOWW!! what a price difference , also, the ADVENTURE is a golden age book, The SPIDER-MAN is a silver -age book ( granted , spider-man is a great character, but i wonder if the prices reflect popularity , rather than scarcity ) ADVENTURE # 247, The first Appearance of The Legion Of Super Heroes is the most expensive book of the series trending at $375.00 in good, $750.00 in very good, and a whopping $1125.00 in fine , and #247 , while not listed as a scarce book ( scarce , being 20-100 copies known to exist ) it is far less common than SPIDER-MAN #1. ADVENTURE COMICS #104 - 209 ,( # 209 the last pre-code issue ) are very difficult to assemble and complete, however, if you can find them, the average price of any of these issues in very good, is $95.00 -$150.00, very reasonable, given that, age , a lack of interest ( at the time ) and lower distribution numbers , largely due to the early television era (all comic titles suffered during the early to mid-fifties , because t.v. was more interesting , young people, read far fewer comics ) As mentioned above, ADVENTURE # 209 was the last pre-code issue, from #210 on, ADVENTURE COMICS began to be less serious , "safer" more kiddie stories, less edgy crime stories ( not that ADVENTURE wasnt silly before, but it was a more violent , and the bad guys got what was coming to them such as one issue's story ended with Clark Kent reading about a crook getting the electric chair and was Clark ever grinning big !!! ) #210 began krypto the super dog, and the stories were aimed at a younger audience . As mentioned above, ADVENTURE 247 began the legion of super-heroes , a very successful feature, which, at #300, ( 1962) took over ADVENTURE COMICS,where it would remain until 1969 , the last issue being #380. After the Legion left ADVENTURE,the series was featured in ACTION COMICS, Then SUPERBOY, ( re-named SUPERBOY & THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES ) and finally their own Title .Meanwhile, with issue #381, the SUPERGIRL series began, with very much the same type of stories used years earlier with SUPERBOY. After #424, SUPERGIRL was discontinued in favor of a new direction the title went through, a brief series with a character known as THE BLACK ORCHID,and then a short , but very interesting run with THE SPECTRE , a supernatural super-hero from the 1940's brought up to date with wield , macabre stories . FROM # 461, until the title was discontinued , a series of super-heroes were featured in ADVENTURE , most notably, The Justice society of America ....There you have it, ADVENTURE COMICS...my personal favorite of all comics ...the early books ( pre-code) being the most desirable ..............Thank you ________Danny Anable , DECEMBER, 2007
