I am very experienced in Halo 1 PC and XBox so I thought it would be nice to share my knowledge with others so they can have a better experience. The following section, part 1 of the two guides I will be writing, describes tactics and skills in multiplayer mode.

The Steps to Success
Do you get killed very easily? Do you always find yourself having the most deaths after each game? I have a few tricks that make deaths less frequent. By less frequent I mean that you end up with a 70:1 Kill:Death ratio. Just follow these easy steps and you will see a noticeable difference in your Kill:Death ratio.

1. Learn to dodge bullets. I'm not talking about matrix-style, but there are a few motions you should get down so well that it is an automatic reaction the minute you get fired at. Start with strafing. Move from left to right and right to left at random. Don't change directions so fast that you stay in the same place. Strafe a few feet, then strafe the other direction for a different distance. Make sure you are strafing in a manner that makes it look to your opponent that you are moving from side to side, not forward and backward. Now we go into more complex dodging techniques. Throw in a few randomly placed crouches while continuing to strafe. Jump at random and hold in crouch while you are in the air. You will be an incredibly hard target if you stay in motion while doing so. Meanwhile, maintain a relatively slow but very steady stream of bullets headed toward your opponent. This will cause them to virtually ignore their surroundings. Your teammate could splatter them with a hog or put an 8-guage shell through their stomach while you distract them. Or you could just finish them off.

2. Develop a 360* awareness. Always glance around your position to get a feel for the tide of the battle and where people are playing. If you see a pile of your team's bodies at the entrance of a cave, don't run down there like a maniac. Toss a nade and then move in through the smoke left for a few moments.  Look for the flashes of gunfire. If you are under fire from a sniper, watch where the rounds are coming from and get out of sight. Stick to the shadows so you are harder to spot. Above all, don't choose white armor if you play free-for-all games.

3. Control your firing rate. A pistol can shoot just as fast, if not faster, in semi-auto as it can in full auto. You just have to click fast. It will be much more accurate. Assault rifles are a lot more precise and damaging in short bursts. You will actually see where you are shooting and the ammo won't seem to disappear in a matter of seconds. Rocket launchers should not be fired quickly. Aim and figure out where your target will be a few seconds later, as most people are in motion. If you can, shoot tough shots because they will seem to appear out of nowhere right in front of your target. I mean shoot right through tiny gaps between trees or as close to the wall as possible so the rockets  come into your opponent's line of sight less than a second before they hit.

4. Develop your sniping skills. A lot of snipers have a tendancy to keep shooting at the same target if they miss the first shot. The only effect this has is a negative one. You will inevitably burn through clip after clip extremely quickly. You will also give away your position for sure. Wait until your target is relatively isolated and take your time while setting up for the headshot. If possible, pop the hog gunners and opposing snipers before anyone else. These are the guys that do the most damage. When going for hog personnel, aim way in front of them if they are in motion. The best time to shoot them is when they are in midair because they move slower. If your flag runner is in trouble, devote your undivided attention to covering him. If he is being pursued, send a bullet right through the head of his pursuer. If you die in the process (be it sniped or blown to bits) immediately take a  vehicle or teleporter to help him out.

5. Learn how to drive the warthog well. Did you know that the warthog can actually rev up before moving so you can snap forward the minute the flag runner/gunner hops in? Keep lightly tapping forward or whatever button/key you have set for gas but don't hold it down. The wheels should spin but the hog will stay put. The second you see your teammate climbing on, hold the gas down and drive to safety. When your hog is about to flip over and you are falling out, repeatedly hit the action button and your hog should land upright. Sometimes you can even recover without ever hitting the ground. When circling the opponent's base with a gunner, don't stay close to the base. The gunner cannot hit targets on top of the bases if the hog is a foot away from the base. Circle around about 20-30ft from the base's walls. This way you have time to react to grenades, rounds from assault rifles/shotguns have less effect on your shields, and your gunner has no trouble drilling targets.

6. Know your surroundings. Look online for maps of the various battlegrounds. You should know all of the ways out, the best sniping/defensive shooting locations, and where the powerups are. Chance favors the prepared mind, and one that knows every inch of the level has a VERY prepared mind.

7. Be patient. If you have snuck around to a rock behind the opponent's base without being spotted, wait for an opportunity. For instance, if the other team has your flag, wait until their flag runner comes and then blow him away. If your teammate is about to steal their flag, let him come out, toss a nade a few feet from where he came out of, and then start shooting controlled bursts. Chances are you will kill anyone careless enough to follow him close up.

8. Be a team player. If everyone is dumb enough to go on offense at the same time, defend the base. Pick up a sniper and a plasma rifle, this will give you sufficient firepower for all ranges. If you prefer human weapons, take a pistol instead of the plasma rifle.

9. Random Skill: Jumping high. To reach heights you used to believe were impossible, jump, hold crouch and forward in, and don't let go of crouch until you land. You can actually jump about 1.5x as high. There are two other methods. You can have a teammate crouch and jump on top of them, then have them stand up, or you can jump on top of a hog. Then jump up onto its machine gun/rocket launcher.

Hope this helps!
