Updated 7/30/07:
Hello Everyone! I originally wrote this guide "October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month". Well, even though we are months away from October I believe the message is worthwhile to keep posted year round. I want to continue to post updates to this guide, and include helpful information about adopting a pet, because I think it is important to get the message across.
There are wonderful pets available for adoption now at your local animal shelter.
Please support your local Humane Society.
If you are looking for a pet to add to your family, please visit petfinder.com on the web.
There is a HUGE list of all the wonderful pets available now for adoption.

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
Looking to add a new dog to your family? Before you go to a pet store, please visit your local animal shelter or Humane Society. October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and there are thousands of dogs just waiting for a loving home, and a chance at life.
According to the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) the statistics are Alarming:
-
8-12 MILLION animals enter shelters each year! 8,000,000-12,000,000!
-
60% of Dogs, and 70% of cats are euthanized because there is no one to adopt them. That's 5-9 Million put to sleep! Majority of them are healthy, adoptable pets.
-
The average cost to own a pet is $400-700 per year (inc food, supplies, etc)
Please do not purchase from a pet store! There are so many healthy, loving pets waiting to be rescued at your local shelter. If you are not sure where to find a shelter close to your home, you can look in your phone book, or go to the Petfinder website online. You will be surprised how many animal shelters are within driving distance of your home.
