Hello to all the breastfeeding mothers out there! When introduced at the right time, the Adiri Breast Bottle Nurser can be the answer to the prayers of parents who have a breastfed baby who will under no circumstances take an ordinary bottle. Maternal Expression is an Authorized Distributor for the Adiri breastbottle nurser, and the concept behind this unique bottle is revolutionary and I wanted to share my thoughts and opinions about this product.
The early weeks after birth are critical to establishing a good milk supply and breastfeeding regimin for both mother and baby. Most lactation consultants will suggest NOT introducing a bottle until at least four to six weeks after birth.
Sometimes the need to introduce a bottle during this time is necessary, and many mothers have introduced a standard bottle, only to find that their babies are confused when offered the breast at the next feeding, or worse case scenario - they will not accept the breast at all. This is called nipple confusion, and it usually happens when a "standard" bottle is introduced to soon during breastfeeding.
Babies want to do whatever is easiest. Bottle feeding is EASY, and comes with immediate gratification. Breastfeeding is hardwork for a newborn baby. It takes much more work for babies to compress the milk ducts behind the areola to express breastmilk, than it is for them to suck on a nipple. Suckling is an innate response that all babies are born with, but the ability to breastfeed is learned through frequent feedings and in order for both mother and baby to be sucessful with it, it must be continued and should not be replaced by frequent ordinary bottle feedings. So what's a mother to do.......
Hence, the Adiri Breastbottle nurser. The bottle looks and feels like the breast. You determine the actual flow of milk by opening one, two, or three holes in the nipple. Caution, once opened, the flow cannot be reversed which is one reason to consider when purchasing this bottle used. There are others, but I will mention them in a future guide.
Since the baby must use its jaws in the same way, the chances for nipple confusion are lessened, and the baby is now able to switch between the breast and the bottle without much difficulty. After numerous conversations with many parents who have used this bottle, it is my opinion that it be introduced between 6 - 12 weeks of age. Older babies will have learned that their milk only comes from their mother's breast and the liklihood that they will switch to a bottle is greatly reduced.
Breastfeeding is a great way to bond with your baby, but when the need arises to introduce a bottle, try the Adiri breastbottle nurser earlier, rather than later to ensure a long and happy breastfeeding relationship with your baby.
