Didn't Sell But Useful for Valuation Purposes

Sellers - Here is what buyers will actually bid on your pieces.

Collections

  • No bids on 23 piece eclectic collection @ $350.  Overpriced, but could sell.  4 Luncheon Knives ($40), 1 Dinner Knife ($20), 5 Luncheon Forks ($50), 10 Teaspoons ($100), 2 Round Soup Spoons ($30), 2 Dessert Spoons ($30) = $270 value without damage to Dinner Knife.
  • 330092473457, Mar-03-7, 56 piece collection mixed Dinner and Luncheon-size 8 placesettings @ $1200, way overpriced, a la carte value is $660, as a weird collecton with mismatched forks and knives the max value might be about $13 per piece or $900, but I wouldn't pay close to that.  Wait and get a proper collection with Dinner Forks (instead of luncheon forks) to go with those Dinner Knives.
  • $12.35 per piece max bid, reserve unmet for this 57 piece collection, unknown reserve, Dec-23-06, 120065846639, $1 starting bid, reserve, no monograms (8 teaspoons - $80, 8 luncheon? forks - $80, 8 salad forks - $80, 8 cream soup spoons - $120, 8 iced tea spoons - $120, 6 French blade luncheon knives - $60, 5 Flat handled butter knives - $50, 1 sugar spoon - $25, 2 solid table spoons - $50, 1 plain gravy ladle - $25, 1 cold meat fork - $50, 1 unusually shaped blade pie server - $35 = MAX VALUE of $720.  New La Reine seller, so can't predict what the reserve is, but it smells like it's too high.  If it's over $700 as I suspect, it won't sell. (Disclosure: I'm bidding to show good faith, but I won't be the buyer.)
  •  56 piece collection, now 150088751858, was 150082992449, 150078832599, 150067073314, 150064369172, 150061346744, etc.), $899 BIN for 8 six-piece luncheon-size settings [$520]- less two soup spoons [-30] + six monogrammed cocktail forks [$30] + solid serving spoon [$25] + sugar spoon [$25] + master butter knife (mis-identified, appears to be HH Paddleblade Butter Knife) [$10] + pie (looks like cake, not pie) server [$25] = a la carte value of $605, but as collection would fetch $700-$750.  Won't sell.  Seller, list it at $600 starting price and get rid of it already!
  • 56 piece collection listed again & again & again endlessly with mis-spelled name (La space Reine please for searches!) and at too high a price, now 150067073314 (last was 150064369172 & 150061346744), $899 starting price, $999 BIN price for 8 six-piece luncheon-size settings [$520}- less two soup spoons [-30] + six monogrammed cocktail forks [$30] + solid serving spoon [$25] + sugar spoon [$25] + master butter knife [$25] + pie server [$25] = MAX VALUE of $620, SO IT WON'T SELL.
  • 52-piece collection listed again, and again, and again for TOO HIGH A PRICE!  Now it's 200054551237 and at the same time is listed for live auction as 300055765936 (I believe now that this is a scam).  This time high bid was $510 and last time max bid was $635, as predicted, below the unknown reserve for this extremely odd (dubious) listing for a MONOGRAMMED (on back) collection of La Reine that supposedly just sold in an active live auction (very weird) as item 300035875904 for $750 + 20%, but was then listed six days later by a new seller as item 200040750746.  The seller has excellent feedback, but is unknown as a La Reine seller, so some caution is in order here.  The max value unmonogrammed is $735.  Either its a resale, in which case the reserve will be too high as the price paid was over the max value it could get here, or the first sale was a sham.  Caveat Emptor here.
  • No bid for 51 piece collection, Nov-19-06, 330049553131, 8 six-piece placesettings of luncheon size (no measurements so unclear), $1200 starting bid, value 8*$75 = $600 + two table spoons 2*$25 = $50 + cold meat fork $50 = $700 total so won't sell.  Worst listing we've seen in months.  Read the guide on Buying and Selling Sterling Flatware on eBay.
  • No bid for 30 piece Luncheon size collection, Nov-19-06, 110053415915, $750 starting bid, 6 four-piece place settings [$300] + 6 iced-tea spoons [$90] = $390 max value so won't sell, and starting price is TWICE it's value.
  • No bid for 30 piece collection of 7 four-piece luncheon size placesettings, Nov-07-06, 320043071028, 7 placesettings + master butter knife and solid tablespoon, $550 starting price, no reserve, listed in kitchen section and not silver flatware section.  (Value is $400 [7x$50+$25+$25] so won't sell.)
  • No bid for 56 piece collection, Oct-29-06, 150049937176, $899 starting price, 8 six-piece luncheon-size settings [$520}- less two soup spoons [-30] + six monogrammed cocktail forks [$30] + solid serving spoon [$25] + sugar spoon [$25] + master butter knife [$25] + pie server [$25] = MAX VALUE of $620.
  • Collection of 68 pieces some w/ monogram didn't make an unknown reserve price with high bid at  $518.88.  Monogram cuts values in half again.  Seller should have set starting price at whatever the reserve was and saved everyone's time.  Now no one will bid again when it's relisted unless it's without reserve.  Too bad as max value unmonogrammed is $985.)
  • Collection of 8 6-piece place settings @ $855 on Sep-11-06 (value about $520, so won't sell)
  • No bid at starting price of $13.25, Luncheon Collection - 12 6-piece place settings @ $875 (missing 6 butter knives, and since there are no measurements I'm assuming its luncheon and not dinner size, so I make the value about $756 - soups at $18 and everything else at $10 each, which means it might sell for $875 - about $13.25 a piece - since it a collection all together.  Let's see.)
  • Hi Bid $10.29 per piece, Aug-07-06, 150017529426, 12 four-piece DINNER-size place settings + 13 iced tea spoons + a few serving pieces (68 pieces total), unknown reserve, BIN $1000, MONOGRAMMED, hi bid $700, 8 bids, unknown reserve.  (The monogram discount strikes again. Monograms usually cut the value in half, but this did better than that since the eBay value for an identical UNmonogrammed collection would be $1,076; Seller suggested the reserve was the scrap value, but I doubt he could get near $700 as scrap.  Too bad as DINNER size is pretty rare in La Reine.)
  • No bid at starting price of $14.84 per piece, Jul-31-06, 120012210495, 64 piece eclectic collection of 8 place settings but mixes dinner and luncheon sizes, starting price $950, no reserve, MONOGRAM. (Perfect listing with details and photos, but even without monogram is still probably too expensive, but with a large and ugly multi-letter monogram this is a no hoper, sorry.  Might go for $400-$500 starting price)
  • No bid, Jul-28-06, 260011556201, 17 piece 4 luncheon size place settings missing one spoon +, $300 starting price, no reserve, no monogram. (top price would be $170, so won't sell.)
  • Hi Bid $11.09 per piece, Jun-06-06, 7419270032, 41 pieces (8 five-piece place settings plus HH Butter Knife), $100 starting price, 13 bids, reserve above $455. (Estimated max value was $420, which this auction exceeded by almost ten percent, so this seller has an unrealistic reserve price.)
  • No Bid at reserve price of $19.50 per piece, Jun-05-06, 7418943812, 82 pieces (10 FB Dinner Knives, 7 Butter Knives, 10 Dinner Forks, 10 Salad Forks, 4 Cocktail Forks, 11 Iced Tea Spoons, 5 Cream Soup Spoons, 10 Tea Spoons, 3 Demitasse Spoons, 1 Set of Carving Knife and Fork, 3 Solid Table Spoons, 2 Cold Meat Forks, 1 Master Butter Knife, 1 3-tined Pickle Fork, 1 Olive Fork, 1 Gravy Ladle, 1 Sugar Shell Spoon), $1,600 starting price, no reserve. (Perfect listing, but high estimate was $1,220 to $1,300.  This price guide is on-the-money, and too high starting bids don't get a bid, and a low starting bid with a too high reserve will only draw bids one time - second auction at lower reserve is always a bust for collections.)
  • Hi bid $11.10 per piece, Jun-02-06, 7418188138, 41 pieces (see 7416184651 for a big picture - 8 luncheon knives, forks, salad forks, teaspoons, 6 iced tea spoons, 1 shell spoon, 2 table spoons), $250 starting price, 10 bids, reserve above $455.  (Starting estimate for max value was $490-$500.  Veteran - Another auction will be useless unless you put starting bid at $400 and no reserve.  It will go to $455 again and maybe higher, but with a reserve you won't get anywhere near $455 again.  Take it, $455 is a good price for this set.)
  • Hi bid $12.51 per piece, May-08-06, 7411758757, 8 five-piece luncheon size place-settings + one HH butter knife, $100 starting bid, too high (unknown reserve), no monogram, 14 bids.
  • Hi bid $10.95 per piece, Apr-23-06, 7407220448, 6 six-piece place settings + 1 solid Table Spoon, $25 starting bid, unknown reserve but Buy-it-Now price of $700, no monogram, 11 bids.
  • Hi bid $9.16 per piece, Mar-19-06, #7397520210, 97 pieces (12 dinner-9 luncheon knives, 10 dinner-12 luncheon forks, 21 teaspoons, 10 soup spoons, 12 salad forks, 11 FH butter knives - All with a huge and ugly "M" monogram), final bid $889.00, 24 bids, did not meet reserve.
  • Hi bid $10.65 per piece, Apr-02-06, #7402401572, (same as below #7390605668, reserve price above $426)

(This is an extremely unusual piece, since it is the first silverplated piece of flatware I've ever seen in La Reine.  Can't be sure it's a Gumbo Spoon, but the measurements and photos seem pretty clear that it is.  Should sell for more than $20 at least.)

  • No bid at $120, Asparagus Server, Dec-03-06, 110061148198, $120 starting bid (First time we've seen this piece on eBay in more than three years, so very rare.  Says it's solid sterling, and condition is fantastic.  Price is very high, but for the most unique pieces it's hard to say what's too much.  I would be one of the few buyers, but it's too much for me, so we'll see if anyone else comes forward.  I covet it though.)

Who Am I and Why Am I Doing This?

My flatware collection is almost a hobby, and I was keeping this information in my head to guide my bidding on new items I needed.  When eBay created Guides, I thought it would be a good place to list historical information to help me decide what to bid on.  Then lots of people started writing to me about it, and it has grown from there.  Feel free to let me know your thoughts or suggestions.  I am just a regular non-professional eBay Buyer, not a professional seller, so you will always get the straight scoop.

Detailed information on buying and selling sterling flatware is here: Building a Sterling Silver Flatware Collection on eBay (http://reviews.ebay.com/Building-a-Sterling-Flatware-Collection-on-eBay_W0QQugidZ10000000000760838)
